Rationale

This study examines whether the type of activity students complete before recess is related to how much aggressive behavior they show during recess. Students either played a violent game, played a nonviolent game, or completed an art project. Researchers then measured the number of minutes each student spent engaging in aggressive behavior.

Hypothesis

Students who play the violent video game will spend significantly more time engaging in aggressive behavior during recess than students who play the nonviolent video game or complete the art project.

Variables & Method

Independent Variable: Group

An indication of which type of lesson the student had completed during the 30 minutes prior to recess. Possible values included “Violent game” if the student had played “Exponent Fighter,” “Nonviolent game” if the student had played “Expondent Builder,” and “Art project” if the student had completed the art project.

Dependent Variable: Value

The total time, in minutes, each student had spent engaging in aggressive acts.

Method: ANOVA was conducted to determine whether mean levels of aggressive behavior differed across the three groups. The ANOVA compared the average minutes of aggressive behavior for students who played the violent game, played the nonviolent game, or completed the art project.

Results & Discussion

The descriptive statistics show that students who played the violent game displayed the highest levels of aggressive behavior during recess. On average, these students spent 10.75 minutes engaging in aggression, compared with 5.86 minutes for students who played the nonviolent game and 4.96 minutes for students who completed the art project.

The boxplot also shows a clear separation between the violent game group and the other two groups. The violent game distribution is centered much higher than the nonviolent game and art project distributions.

The findings support the hypothesis. Students who played the violent game engaged in substantially more aggressive behavior than students in the other two conditions. The mean aggression score for the violent game group was nearly double that of the nonviolent game group and more than double that of the art project group.
