The NYPD hate crimes dataset has both positive and negative aspects. One of the positive aspect is that it provides a large amount of information about reported hate crimes in New York City. The dataset contains information such as the month and year of the incident, location, offense category, and type of bias. This helps in identifying patterns and comparing different types of hate crimes over time.
One negative aspect, however, is that the dataset does not represent every hate crime. A crime must be reported to the police and recognized as a hate crime for it to appear in the data. That means incidents may be missing or classified incorrectly. Therefore, the dataset cannot be treated as a complete representation of hate crimes in New York City.
One path I would hypothetically study is how hate crimes change from year to year. A second path would be to study whether certain types of bias are more common in particular NYC boroughs or locations. These analyses could help identify patterns and areas that deserve further research.
