Next Word Predictor

author: Muhammad Bilal date: October 2026 autosize: true

Executive Summary & Pitch

• Objective: Deliver a fast, reliable next-word prediction interface for mobile and web platforms.
• Problem: Typing on small screens or long documents is slow and prone to typographical errors.
• Solution: A data product trained on millions of text records predicting user intent in real time.
• Value Proposition: Low latency (<50ms response), lightweight memory footprint, scalable architecture.

Data & Algorithm Architecture

• Data Source: Text corpora from SwiftKey datasets (Blogs, News, Twitter in English).
• Preprocessing: Tokenization, lowercasing, removal of profanity, numbers, and special characters.
• N-gram Modeling: Built Unigram, Bigram, Trigram, and Quadgram frequency tables.
• Katz Back-off Algorithm:
  1. Checks Quadgram for last 3 words.
  2. Falls back to Trigram/Bigram if unseen.
  3. Uses Unigram frequency as final baseline.

App Interface & Features

• URL: https://muhammadbilal.shinyapps.io/nextword/
• Real-time Prediction: Primary next word displayed dynamically as you type or hit submit.
• Secondary Predictions: Provides alternative candidates (you | the) for broader context.
• Model Explanation: Transparent summary explaining fallback logic to end-users.

Performance & Optimization

• Pruning Strategy: Removed ultra-rare N-grams (count = 1) to reduce dataset size by >80%.
• Fast Lookup: Data structures optimized using data.table / data.tree in R.
• RAM Footprint: Fits comfortably under shinyapps.io memory limit (<100MB RAM usage).
• Speed: Instant response with no delay on typical phrase inputs.

Business Use Case & Future Scope

• Target Integrations: Smart keyboards, customer support chat assistants, content writing tools.
• Scalability: Easily extensible to multi-language corpora (Spanish, German, etc.).
• Future Enhancements: Deep learning embeddings (LSTM/Transformers) for context awareness.
• Conclusion: A production-ready prototype ready for commercial testing.
