The NYC hate crimes dataset has several positive aspects. It contains information about hate crimes across multiple years and counties, allowing researchers to examine patterns based on time, location, and the motivation behind each crime. The dataset also has different variables, which lets you look into the relationships of the different crimes. However, one bad thing about the data set is that hate crimes are likely underreported or inconsistently reported. The tutorial explains that local law enforcement agencies collect and submit hate-crime data, but the FBI can’t require every agency to do so. Therefore, the dataset may not represent the true number of hate crimes that may have occurred. Another downside to this data set is that raw counts can be misleading because counties have different population sizes. Because of that, I would hypothetically like to study how hate-crime rates change, and how those rates differ between counties after accounting for population. I would also like to investigate whether certain types of hate crimes changed during particular periods. Those two paths would provide more context to the data set, and potentially reveal patterns in hate crimes by looking at the changes overtime.
