Dataset Reflection
There was a lot to look at in the dataset with there being over 4000 reports from all the different years. It also includes the year, month, county, precinct, and bias motive for each report. This made it easier to compare different areas and groups. One negative is that it only shows hate crimes that were reported and recorded by the NYPD. Other incidents may have happened but were never included. Some column names also had to be cleaned before using them. We also used the same 2020 population numbers for each year, even though New York’s population probably did not stay exactly the same.
For my first study idea, I would look at which hate-crime motives went up or down during the years included in the dataset. This could help identify increases or decreases over time. A second path would be comparing hate-crime rates among the five counties. I would want to determine whether certain counties have higher rates after population size is considered and which bias motives are most common in each location. I think having all the different years in one file made it easier to notice when the numbers did change.
