2 All pH data

2.1 Data availability

Availability is assessed before any filter related to changes in pH measurement method. Only the following filters are applied:

  1. pH must be between 6 and 10;
  2. the sampling level must be S (surface) or F (bottom).

All observations assigned to S are pooled irrespective of numerical depth; the same rule is applied to observations assigned to F.

4.4 Monthly climatologies

The monthly climatology is calculated using only spectrophotometric pH data. For each monitoring site and sampling level, all individual observations from the same calendar month are included directly in the calculation; observations are not averaged by year-month beforehand.

Anomalies are calculated for every individual spectrophotometric observation as the measured pH minus the climatological pH of the corresponding calendar month, monitoring site, and sampling level. No monthly averaging is performed.

5 Synthesis

Because pHNBS and pHT cover different periods and are reported on different scales, their time series are not combined. This table presents the two method-specific trends side by side. Each slope is estimated independently from method-specific monthly anomalies using GLS with an AR(1) correlation structure in chronological observation order. Slopes and standard errors are expressed in pH units per decade.
