Its Italian title means “in another life.” Just as the title suggests, the song is about a destined love—one that transcends the boundaries of our present time and lifetime, in the hope that the two lovers will someday meet again. Over a gentle piano melody, voices yearning desperately for reunion come together and create ripples of emotion. As the harmonies of the four members gradually build, the song ultimately reaches the pinnacle of sublime emotion. Rather than relying on elaborate vocal techniques, the music focuses wholly on emotion. Paired with Gustav Klimt’s celebrated painting The Kiss, it creates an even deeper sense of visual immersion. Can you see the two lovers enveloped in the brilliant gold that fills the screen? The scene, in which the two figures appear to melt into one, seems to give visual form to the intense immersion in love expressed by the music. In particular, the two figures holding each other tightly against the golden background symbolize an eternal union—as though even the passage of time had come to a halt.
