Workshop Overview

This workshop introduces participants to the theoretical foundations and practical applications of mouse-tracking techniques in psycholinguistics and cognitive science research.

Participants will gain hands-on experience in

  • designing experiments
  • collecting behavioural data
  • analysing mouse trajectories
  • interpreting cognitive processes reflected in response dynamics

Why Mouse Tracking?

This workshop will introduce participants to the theoretical foundations and practical applications of mouse-tracking techniques in psycholinguistics and cognitive science research, with demonstrations of experimental design, data collection, analysis and interpretation. Making behavioral response with the click of a mouse differs across different experimental design platforms. This workshop will also briefly highlight the differences in mouse responses in PsychoPy, one of the most commonly used software for designing behavioral experiments and MouseTracker (Freeman & Ambady, 2010) which records a continuous movement of mouse trajectory and is capable capturing decision making complexity from the moment, the participant initiates mouse movement until the response is made. The strength of MouseTracker over other platform is the richness of the data it generates and the continuous recording of the mouse movement with the resolution of 60-70 Hz speed during the course of making a response. The workshop will introduce and train the participants on the use of Designer, Runner and Analyzer components of the software. The participants will also practice designing some sample experiments, run the experiment and generate the data from the Analyzer and learn to make sense of the data and interpret the data.

Participants will also design sample experiments, collect behavioural data, generate trajectory analyses, and learn how to interpret the resulting measures.
