Workshop Overview

This workshop introduces participants to the theoretical foundations and practical applications of mouse-tracking techniques in psycholinguistics and cognitive science research.

Participants will gain hands-on experience in

  • designing experiments
  • collecting behavioural data
  • analysing mouse trajectories
  • interpreting cognitive processes reflected in response dynamics

Why Mouse Tracking?

Making a behavioural response with a mouse click differs substantially across experimental platforms.

The workshop compares the mouse response mechanisms used in PsychoPy with those implemented in MouseTracker (Freeman & Ambady, 2010), a dedicated system that continuously records mouse trajectories throughout the decision-making process.

Unlike conventional point-and-click recording, MouseTracker captures the entire movement trajectory from movement initiation until response completion at approximately 60–70 Hz, providing rich temporal information about cognitive competition and decision making.

Hands-on Training

Participants will receive practical training on

  • Designer
    • Creating experiments
  • Runner
    • Conducting experiments
  • Analyzer
    • Processing and visualising trajectory data

Participants will also design sample experiments, collect behavioural data, generate trajectory analyses, and learn how to interpret the resulting measures.
