One positive of the data set is that it reports a wide range of types of hate crimes, even those that have very low maximums, such as anti-Hindu crimes. Furthermore, it provides very granulated data, separating crimes by county and year. One of the downsides of the data set is that it is wide, not long. Each hate crime type gets its own column, instead of a single column that includes all the types. However, we were able to deal with that issue quickly with pivot_longer. Another downside is that the hate crimes data set only provides the raw count of hate crime reports, not the incidence of hate crimes per 100,000 people in each county. More populous counties may have more reports but not actually a higher incidence of hate crimes than smaller counties. We were able to join the hate crime data set with a population data set to calculate incidence ourselves, but it was more arduous than if population data was already included in the hate crimes data set. As already discussed, another issue with the data set is that many hate crimes go under reported.
One path I would be interested in exploring is the general prevalence of all hate crimes over time. Did total hate crimes go up or down with time? We can see that hate crimes against Jewish people spiked in 2012, but crimes against gay men was lower than average that year, so it is hard to determine if total hate crimes were lower or higher than average in 2012 as long as we keep the data separate. I would also be interested in looking more critically at the prevalence of very rarely reported hate crimes, such as anti-age crimes. Perhaps some counties simply don’t report these rarer crimes at all, so those counties that never report those types of crimes should really be excluded from the data analysis for those crimes. What is the mean and median for these rarer crimes when all the counties that report 0 are removed? What percentage of total hate crimes do these rarer ones make up, again when counties that don’t report them are disregarded?
