Video Game Market Analysis

Executive Summary

This report analyses historical video game sales data to identify market trends that can support strategic decision-making for video game developers and publishers.

The analysis focuses on four key business questions:

  • Which game genres are becoming more or less popular over time?
  • Which genres generate the highest sales?
  • How do genre preferences differ across regions?
  • Which genres appeal globally compared with specific regional markets?

The analysis shows that Action games have experienced the strongest long-term growth while consistently generating the highest global sales. Sports games also generate exceptionally high sales despite fewer annual releases, suggesting a highly profitable market segment. Platform and Strategy games remain among the smallest genres in both release volume and total sales.

The report concludes with recommendations on how developers can combine historical sales trends with player feedback from gaming communities to make more informed development decisions.

Business Problem

The video game industry is highly competitive, with development cycles often lasting several years. Selecting the wrong genre or targeting the wrong audience can significantly reduce a game’s commercial success.

Historical sales data provides valuable insight into market demand by identifying which genres continue to grow, which are declining, and how preferences differ across global markets. While historical data cannot predict future success with certainty, it provides an evidence-based foundation for strategic planning.

This analysis aims to answer four business questions:

  • Which genres have become more popular over time?
  • Which genres generate the highest sales?
  • How do genre preferences differ across regions?
  • Which genres have broad global appeal compared with those that perform well only in specific regions?

The findings are intended to help publishers and independent developers make more informed decisions when planning future projects.

Data Source

This analysis uses the Video Game Sales dataset from Kaggle.

Although the dataset extends beyond 2015, there are relatively few observations after this period. Including these years introduces bias into trend analysis, so only games released up to 2015 were included.

The dataset contains:

  • Game title
  • Publisher
  • Release year
  • Genre
  • Global sales
  • North America sales
  • Europe sales
  • Japan sales
  • Other region sales
  • Sales ranking

Before analysis, the dataset was cleaned by:

  • Removing missing and invalid records.
  • Standardising column names.
  • Filtering incomplete years.
  • Cleaning missing numerical values where appropriate.

Methodology

The analysis was completed in four stages.

1. Genre Growth Over Time

Measured the number of games released within each genre each year to identify changing market trends.

2. Global Sales by Genre

Calculated annual global sales for each genre to identify which markets generate the greatest commercial return.

3. Regional Genre Preferences

Compared sales across North America, Europe, Japan and Other Regions to identify regional differences in player preferences.

4. Global vs Regional Appeal

Compared each region’s performance against the global average to identify genres with broad international appeal versus those that perform particularly well in specific markets.

Findings

Genre Growth Over Time

The chart shows how the number of games released within each genre has changed over time.

Action games experienced the strongest long-term growth, indicating increasing popularity among developers and publishers. In contrast, Platform and Strategy games remained relatively small throughout the period analysed.

This suggests that industry investment has increasingly focused on Action titles, while traditional genres such as Platform games have become less prominent.

Global Sales by Genre

While Action games dominate in terms of both release volume and global sales, Sports games provide an interesting comparison.

Although considerably fewer Sports games are released each year, total sales remain close to those of Action games. This indicates that Sports titles generate significantly higher average sales per release.

One possible explanation is the strength of established annual franchises, which benefit from loyal audiences and consistent demand.

Platform and Strategy games remain among the weakest-performing genres in total sales, suggesting they appeal to smaller market segments.

Business Insight

Action games provide the largest commercial opportunity based on historical trends. However, market size alone does not determine success.

Studios should use market trends as a guide while focusing on developing high-quality, differentiated products rather than simply following the most popular genre.

Regional Genre Preferences

This visualisation compares the market share of different genres across North America, Europe, Japan and Other Regions.

Action games maintain strong performance across most markets, although regional differences become apparent.

Europe shows consistently strong demand for both Action and Shooter games, while Japan demonstrates noticeably different purchasing behaviour, with genres such as Role-Playing Games maintaining a larger share of the market.

These differences illustrate that player preferences vary geographically and should be considered when planning international releases.

Business Insight

Studios planning global launches should consider tailoring localisation, marketing campaigns and release strategies to individual regions rather than assuming identical customer preferences worldwide.

Global vs Regional Genre Preferences

The heatmap compares each region’s average sales for every genre against the global average.

Red indicates genres that perform above the global average within a region, while blue indicates below-average performance.

This allows developers and publishers to distinguish between genres with broad global appeal and those that rely more heavily on specific regional markets.

Business Insight

Understanding regional strengths allows publishers to allocate marketing budgets more effectively and identify opportunities for targeted expansion.

Strategic Recommendations

Based on the findings, several strategic recommendations emerge.

Focus on High-Growth Genres

Action games continue to demonstrate strong growth and consistently generate the highest sales, making them an attractive option for developers seeking large commercial opportunities.

Evaluate Sales Efficiency

Sports games generate exceptionally strong sales despite relatively few releases. Companies with access to recognised licences or innovative sports concepts may benefit from entering this market.

Use Regional Data to Guide Marketing

Regional differences suggest that marketing campaigns, localisation and release priorities should be adapted to suit different audiences.

Combine Quantitative and Qualitative Research

Historical sales data explains what has performed well but does not explain why.

Before committing to development, companies should complement quantitative analysis with player feedback from platforms such as Reddit, YouTube and gaming forums. Community discussions often reveal emerging trends, requested features and recurring frustrations that may not appear in formal reviews.

Using both historical sales data and player sentiment provides a stronger foundation for strategic decision-making.

Limitations

Several limitations should be considered when interpreting these findings.

  • Only data up to 2015 was included due to limited observations in later years.
  • The dataset does not account for modern business models such as free-to-play games, live-service titles or subscription services.
  • Factors such as marketing budgets, review scores, publisher reputation and franchise recognition were not included.
  • The analysis measures historical commercial performance rather than game quality.

These findings should therefore be interpreted as indicators of historical market behaviour rather than predictions of future success.

Conclusion

Historical sales data provides valuable insight into long-term trends within the video game industry.

The analysis shows that Action games dominate both release volume and total sales, while Sports games generate exceptionally high sales relative to the number of titles released. Regional analysis further demonstrates that player preferences vary considerably across global markets, highlighting the importance of localisation and targeted marketing.

For developers and publishers, the strongest approach is to combine historical sales analysis with current community research. Using both quantitative data and qualitative player feedback enables companies to identify commercially attractive opportunities while remaining responsive to changing player expectations.
