Introduction

Video games are a major global entertainment industry, but sales performance is not evenly distributed across genres, platforms, regions or time periods. This article uses five interactive charts to explore what drives global video game sales using the Video Game Sales dataset.

The main question explored is:

What factors influence global video game sales?

1. Which game genres sell the most globally?

This chart shows that global video game sales are concentrated in a few major genres. Action, Sports and Shooter games perform strongly, suggesting that mainstream and competitive game categories have broad international appeal.

2. How have global video game sales changed over time?

This chart shows how global video game sales changed between 1980 and 2016. Sales increased gradually during the 1980s and 1990s, then rose sharply during the 2000s before reaching a peak around 2008–2009. After this period, sales declined, suggesting that the traditional packaged video game market changed after the late 2000s.

3. How do regional sales differ by genre?

This chart compares genre, region and sales. It shows that regional markets do not behave exactly the same. Some genres perform better in North America and Europe, while Japan has a different sales pattern.

4. Which platforms combine high sales and large game libraries?

This multivariate chart compares platform, number of games, average sales and total sales. It gives a deeper view of platform success because a platform may have high total sales either from many games or from fewer high-performing games.

5. Which individual games sold the most globally?

This chart shows the highest-selling individual games in the dataset. The interactive tooltips provide additional details such as platform, genre, publisher and release year.

Conclusion

The analysis shows that video game sales are shaped by genre, platform, region and time. Action, Sports and Shooter games dominate global sales, but sales patterns vary across regions and platforms. The strongest-selling games are often connected to successful platforms and widely appealing genres. Overall, the global gaming market is not driven by one factor alone, but by a combination of genre popularity, platform reach, regional demand and historical sales trends.
