Greater Dandenong looks green on a map. Nearly half its land carries vegetation — more than leafy Boroondara. Yet on a hot day it runs hotter, because almost none of that green is tree canopy: it is grass and low shrub, the kind of greenery that does not cool. Across Melbourne, the shade that actually lowers the temperature is handed out by wealth — and the suburbs that need it most have the least.

These five charts trace how Melbourne’s greenery, its heat and its wealth line up — and why the city’s leafiest-looking suburbs are not always its coolest.

1. The canopy is wildly uneven

Most councils sit below the metropolitan average of 15.3%. The shortfall is concentrated in the western and northern growth corridors.

2. And it tracks wealth

The correlation is 0.62: roughly 40% of the difference in a suburb’s canopy is explained by its socioeconomic standing alone. Wealth doesn’t fully determine how green a suburb is — but it clearly shapes it.

3. Less canopy, more heat — and the disadvantaged bear it

Canopy and heat move together tightly (correlation −0.79): every extra patch of trees measurably cools a suburb.

4. The split, drawn on the map

The western and northern arc glows red; the eastern hills run green. The inequality the numbers describe is, on the ground, a visible line through the city.

5. The west isn’t barren — it’s just not cooling green

This is the twist the opening promised. The poorer councils are not short of greenery — they are full of grass and shrubs. What they lack is tree canopy, the only vegetation that meaningfully cools. The share of a suburb’s greenery that is tree canopy tracks wealth even harder (correlation 0.73) than the total amount does.

And because a shade tree takes decades to mature, today’s gap is tomorrow’s locked in. Closing it means planting where the heat and the need are greatest — and protecting the mature canopy that already exists, because the next generation of shade is thirty years away.
