Final Project - One Piece Data

Introduction

Over the last year I have been watching a show called One Piece, it has over 1160 episodes. It is one of the highest rated TV shows on IMDb and is still making new episodes weekly. I wanted to scrape through IMDb and look through the shows data from their first three full years of episodes (2000-2002) and the three most recent full years (2023-2025).

How to find my data

You can access the data I scraped, in separate code, through this URL. https://myxavier-my.sharepoint.com/:x:/g/personal/kovacf_xavier_edu/IQDWg5DbeL5tSbmgJ-tI1jwvATnz8zcJBPon-b2SO0w2yiE?download=1

Variables

Here are the variables of the data frame.

Name Description
episode_name The name and the number of episode.
episode_date The date the episode came out.
episode_description The description of the episode (plot).
episode_rating The official IMDb rating the episode got (#/10).
episode_review_count The total amount of reviewers that submitted a review (thousands).

Some Summary Statistics

These are a few summary statistics for these six years of data. Looking at how many episodes are in the data, the average, median, min and max rating. Also looking at review count average and median. Finally looking at the start and end date of the data.

Creating Visualizations

My goal was to create visualizations to see how much more popular One Piece has become over the last 27 years. I created graphs for ratings over the years, the average reviews for each year, the distribution of ratings through those years,

1. Average Ratings Over The Years

We see that over these six years the show consistently gets rated around 8.09. However in 2023-25 the average rating is 8.47 and the first three years of the show is 7.69. So this shows us that even though the show has been going on for 27 years, it keeps up the consistency of the content.

2. The Average Reviews for Each Year

In this graph we can clearly see the popularity of One Piece sky rocket. In the first three years of the show the average amount of reviews is less than half of the three most recent years.

3. Distributions of Ratings

This graph shows us that the median rating is rising each year proving that the quality of the episodes improves over the years. The boxes and whiskers get smaller meaning the ratings become more consistent, fewer highs and lows. The outliers decrease which means they are producing less lower-rated episodes.

4. Number of Episodes per Year

This graph shows the consistency of One Piece episode production over the years. The first three years on average produced more episodes than the last three years. This is a case of quality over quantity, with the previous graphs proving that One Piece is consistently good even though there are less episodes per year.

5. Highest Rated Episodes

I wanted to list out the top 10 rated episodes during these 6 years. The average rating of these episodes is 9.73/10. All of these episodes are from 2023-2025.

Data Set Two (Jikan API)

Jikan API is one of the most active online anime + manga community and database. I wanted to look into this data set and grab every single episode from the show. Since IMDb is a little restrictive with scraping this data set give me ratings of every episode and also a list of episodes that are filler or not. In anime filler is unique compared to other shows. Filler episodes are not apart of the original manga story line but are typically produced to prevent the anime from catching up to the source material. Especially for shows that have been on a weekly release schedule over the last 27 years there is a good amount of filler.

Filler Episodes per Year

This is a line graph of looking at the trends of filler episodes per year. With 2007 being having the most filler episodes 16 out of 29 total episodes that year. Through the 1156 total episodes the show only consists of 8.39% of filler.

Conclusion

Through this analysis it proved that One Piece is only getting better with time. Even though I am a little biased towards the show, we can see just how popular this show has become over the last 27 years. One Piece has done an excellent job with being consistent and not having a lot of filler compared to other Animes. The show has about 1160 episodes at the time of writing this and they are still projected to go on for about 5-8 years. I am curious to see if One Piece stays on this upward trend for the rest of the show.
