Annual Time-,Month-, and Pasture-specific Cattle Selection

The spatial burn data we have been provided with immediately posed a challenge because the burn units were inconsistent from year to year, so I began by digitizing roads, ditches, and firebreaks (to the best of my ability) for the purpose of having a standardized polygon layer to which we could spatially join each year’s burn dates. Some pastures may be overly subdivided, but this is to accommodate the fact that burn polygons morphed from year to year. It’s better to have more polygons than fewer because we can always aggregate them back up to the pasture level when necessary.

Figure 1. An interactive property map with the burn unit polygons that we digitized. The burn units are colored by pasture, and hovering the mouse over a given unit will provide you with the unit identifier. Unit identifiers use the “Pasture-Subunit” convention, so for example, “FG1-3” refers to subunit 3 of Front Gate 1 pasture. Gray units fall outside of the provided pastures of interest.

With the standardized burn unit polygons, we then spatially joined the burn dates to these polygons and calculated time-since-fire for each polygon for each month of the study period. We categorized time-since-fire into 4 categories that reffered to as “Rough” (see below).

Throughout this document, “Rough” refers to time-since-fire, with categories defined as follows:

Figure 2. An interactive map of all burn units colored by “Rough” category for June 2024. As stated above, the category “3+” includes units that burned more than 3 years ago, as well as units for which we had no record of burning since 2022.

We have provided various breakdowns of cattle selection for consideration at multiple spatial scales. For each pasture, I first provide rough-level use and selection figures. Rough-level statistics were achieved by aggregating the burn units within each pasture by “Rough” category, and then spatially joining the cattle locations to these aggregated polygons. This provides a rough-level understanding of how cattle are selecting for or against areas with different time-since-fire categories. However, at the rough-level, we lose unit-specific burn dates. Therefore, the second set of figures and maps are at the unit-level, which is more fine-scale than the rough-level. The burn unit level figures and maps were created by spatially joining the cattle locations to the original burn unit polygons (without aggregating them by “Rough” category).

Temporally, we provide year-, month-, and time-of-day-specific breakdowns of cattle selection. For the time-of-day-specific (henceforth, tod-specific) breakdowns, we categorized cattle locations into morning, day, evening, and night based on the time of day and sun position at the time of each location. The tod-specific breakdowns are provided for both rough-level and unit-level analyses and are defined more specifically as:
