There is a 108% improvement of average exam scores on 0-2 hours of study hours vs 6+ hours, jumping from 0-2 hours to 2-4 hours gives us 40% improvement, 2-4 hours to 4-6 hours gives 24% improvement, and finally 4 to 6 hours and more shows that we are getting an 20% improvement on the average exam score.
This means that students with less than 1 hour to study will have more benefit in adding their study time, and as we go further we can also see the improvements decline but not as much as one particular reason for this diminishing return is the exam score capped only at 100. This is further proven on the density chart where majority of the 6+ hours group’s density is at the 100 score.
And the finally, Line Chart shows that both gender gets the same benefits in each study hour groups where there are little to no differences are shown.
The dataset contains 1000 records of students. The dataset captures a broad range of behavioral and demographic variables, including daily study hours, sleep duration, mental health ratings, social media usage, attendance percentage, gender, age, and parental education level. The questions explored is how much improvement can we get in the hours we put in, in studying.
I binned the study_hours_per_day to into four groups which are 0 to 2 hours, 2 to 4 hours, 4 to 6 hours, and 6 or more hours per day to reduce noice from plotting. The visualizations are using ggplot 2 and the multi pannel are used with patchwork. I then filtered out the “Others” from the gender column only because it only has 40+ columns as it may give misleading results to the chart unlike male and female having equal numbers of rows. And finaly calculated the study hours and exam scores to it’s mean.
The findings shows that there are significant improvements in exam scores as the study hours increases. Although as much as I want to cover more from this dataset, I saw that there are no more strong correlations connecting to exam scores.

Figure 2 Score Distribution by Study Hours: The chart proves that the reason on why there was a diminishing return is because the exam was capped at the score of 100 by showing that the group 6h+ has a narrow density on the 100 area.
