AGS Newsletter March 2026

President’s Update

This year so far in AGS, we have focused on support for undocumented students and advocating for campus safety. My undergraduate counterpart and I met several times with the Chancellor to emphasize the importance of the University issuing timely warnings to the campus if there are immigration enforcement actions in line with SB-98, and the Chancellor and us now appear to be in agreement on the University using ZotAlerts in situations in which immigration agents pose a danger to students. We also worked to help convene a committee dedicated to evaluating lighting around campus, which is in the process of doing an evaluation of areas around Graduate & Family Housing, classroom buildings, and common walking paths. Another point of emphasis for AGS this quarter has been advocating for the safety of student workers and career staff members. In meetings with the VCSA of Student Affairs and Dean of Students, we have been impressing upon them the importance of having trauma-informed responses when students and staff report harassment, the need for the University to provide comprehensive accommodations (like no-contact orders) that are also accessible to career staff, and for the University to prevent retaliation from supervisors against students and staff who report harassment. We will be continuing these conversations into the Spring.

The VP External team has been hard at work focusing on state and federal advocacy! We have orginized a trip to Sacramento and Washington D.C. through LobbyCorp to advocate for student’s rights.

Hi fellow grad students,

We are Katie Lord and Azara Boschee, the current co-VPs of Social Affairs for AGS. We make sure to host fun and inviting events for graduate students, and we have already hosted 5 amazing events this academic year, including two craft events, two pub nights, and a pool party! We currently have plans for more pub nights with trivia and karaoke competitions, craft nights, and a NEW puzzle competition event! Please see our calendar on the AGS website, ZotSpot, and our Instagram for updates about any events. We love seeing new and returning faces at our events, so we hope to see you there!

The newest version of the AGS Constitution has gone through our revision committee and review with SGSM. AGS Council has approved this version this quarter, and it will be up for the final ratification vote in the AGS election. Council members continue to sit on committees and boards throughout the university to look out for grad student interests and provide grad student perspectives.
