This dataset covers Substance Use — including marijuana, cocaine, and alcohol — across different age groups and U.S. states. The data were collected by individual states as part of the NSDUH study and span the years 2002 to 2018. Both absolute totals (in thousands of people) and rates (as a percentage of the population) are provided.

The goal of this dashboard is to visualize which substances are most commonly used and to identify patterns by year, state and age group.

Naming Convention for Legends - this dashboard is based on following columns

This table summarizes substance use percentages across each age group, showing minimum, maximum, mean, median, and standard deviation values to describe the distribution and variability in the data.
Boxplots summarize the distribution of substance use percentages across states by age group, highlighting median values, variability, and potential outliers.
The heatmap highlights relative levels of substance use across states and age groups. Darker cells indicate higher percentages, allowing quick identification of geographic hotspots and demographic patterns.
The distribution plot illustrates how substance use percentages are spread across states, highlighting common prevalence ranges and variation between age groups.
The Sankey diagram shows flows of substance use between age groups and substances, with flow widths indicating relative proportions.
The correlation plot highlights relationships between substance use percentages across age groups and substances, revealing which variables tend to increase or decrease together.
This map shows which U.S. states have the highest substance use percentages, with darker colors representing higher prevalence and revealing geographic hotspots.
Scatter points represent state-level substance use percentages, and density contours highlight clusters where values are most concentrated across age groups.
This line chart displays the highest reported substance-use percentage among three age groups (12–17, 18–25, 26+) for Alcohol, Cocaine, and Marijuana by year. Each point represents the peak age-group prevalence for that substance in a given year. Dashed line extensions indicate a one-year linear projection based on observed historical trends.
