Month is a categorical variable with different levels, called factors.

This is one way to reorder the Months so they do not default to alphabetical (you will see another way to reorder DIRECTLY in the chunk that creates the plot below in Plot #1

airquality$Month<-factor(airquality$Month,
                         levels=c("May", "June","July", "August",
                                  "September"))

Plot 1: Create a histogram categorized by Month

p1 <- airquality |>
  ggplot(aes(x=Temp, fill=Month)) +
  geom_histogram(position="identity")+
  scale_fill_discrete(name = "Month",
                      labels = c("May", "June","July", "August", "September")) +
  labs(x = "Monthly Temperatures from May - Sept",
       y = "Frequency of Temps",
       title = "Histogram of Monthly Temperatures from May - Sept, 1973",
       caption = "New York State Department of Conservation and the National Weather Service") #provide the data source
p1
`stat_bin()` using `bins = 30`. Pick better value `binwidth`.

Question: Is this plot useful in answering questions about monthly temperature values?

Answer: Yes because the color coding help the reader recognize the months. The number along the x axis help the reader interpret the temperature number and the y axis helps you see the frquency of each temperature,

Plot 2: Improve the histogram of Average Temperature by Month

p2 <- airquality |>
  ggplot(aes(x=Temp, fill=Month)) +
  geom_histogram(position="identity", alpha=0.5, binwidth = 5, color = "white")+
  scale_fill_discrete(name = "Month", labels = c("May", "June","July", "August", "September")) +
  labs(x = "Monthly Temperatures from May - Sept",
       y = "Frequency of Temps",
       title = "Histogram of Monthly Temperatures from May - Sept, 1973",
       caption = "New York State Department of Conservation and the National Weather Service")
p2

Plot 3: Create side-by-side boxplots categorized by Month

p3 <- airquality |>
  ggplot(aes(Month, Temp, fill = Month)) +
  labs(x = "Months from May through September", y = "Temperatures",
       title = "Side-by-Side Boxplot of Monthly Temperatures",
       caption = "New York State Department of Conservation and the National Weather Service") +
  geom_boxplot() +
  scale_fill_discrete(name = "Month", labels = c("May", "June","July", "August", "September"))
p3

Plot 4: Side by Side Boxplots in Gray Scale

p4 <- airquality |>
ggplot(aes(Month, Temp, fill = Month)) +
  labs(x = "Monthly Temperatures", y = "Temperatures",
       title = "Side-by-Side Boxplot of Monthly Temperatures",
       caption = "New York State Department of Conservation and the National Weather Service") +
  geom_boxplot()+
  scale_fill_grey(name = "Month", labels = c("May", "June","July", "August", "September"))

Brief Essay

The plot above is a histogram. It shows the frequency of average wind speeds in miles per hour in each month. The x axis shows various wind speeds, the y axis shows the frequency of each wind speed, and the title specifies the timeframe(May - September) From the visualization, I can conclude that the highest average wind speed experienced was 20 mph, which occurred in the months of May and June. Looking at the y axis I can also see that wind speed was not very frequent. Another conclusion I can make is that the most frequent average wind speed was 10 mph since the bar is the tallest. Some code utilized to make this plot includes geom_histogram which determines the type of plot. Additionally, labs(x=““, y=”“) made the labels in the plot’s x and y axis. Lastly, aes=() helped color code based on month. All of these aspects made the visualization more readable and easier to understand.
