For this week’s data dive I will be completing the following tasks:
Showing 3 columns of data that were unclear to me until I read the documentation of the data
One element of the data that is still unclear even after reading the data documentation
2 visualizations that show the element of the data that I deemed unclear in the previous task
Showing how many explicitly missing rows, implicitly missing rows, and empty groups there are
Defining what an outlier would be in one of my columns
I will also be providing what insight, significance, and any further questions come from the analysis done in each task.
Here I am going to display 3 columns (ORB_per_100, DRB_per_100, and TRB_per_100) that I was confused by before I read the documentation for the data. Initially, I was expecting there to be a “REB_per_100” column for the average rebounds per 100 possessions for each team. However, after reading the documentation, I understood that this was broken into offensive rebounds and defensive rebounds. And for anyone who wanted an all encompassing value there is a total rebounds column as well.

The insight I gather from this is that it is important to read the documentation for data to clarify any confusion on the columns. This is significant because I was able to ensure I understood these 3 columns and therefore can use them to complete analysis effectively. A question I would have would be why wasn’t there an additional column called “Stocks” that combines Steals and Blocks (similar to Total Rebounds) created?
Here I am going to display an example of something I am still confused by even after reading the documentation. I found that in the first few seasons of data there are a few teams that are labeled as missing the playoffs despite having made the playoffs in real life. Here is an example of one of those incorrectly labeled teams:

The insight I gather from this is that it is important to check your data to see if it is accurate before trusting the analysis you do on it. This is significant because your analysis cannot be trusted unless the data is confirmed to be accurate. This leads me to ask: Are there any other inaccurate entries in the data?
Here I am going to display visualizations that emphasize the problem that I identified in the previous task.
The first visualization shows how many teams were labeled as making the playoffs in the 2016-17 and 2023-24 seasons. There are supposed to be 16 playoff teams every year, so we can see that that there are 9 missing playoff teams in 2023-24.
The second visualization shows how many teams are labeled as making the playoffs in the 3 most recent seasons in the dataset (2023-24, 2022-23, and 2021-22). We can see that there are not only 9 missing playoff teams in the 2023-24 season, but the 2022-23 season is missing all 16 of its playoff teams.

The insight I gather from this is that it pays to check the accuracy of the data for yourself. This is significant in order to perform effective analysis on the data. Once again I would ask: Is there any other inaccurate entries of data in this dataset?
Here I show the explicitly missing values, implicitly missing values, and empty groups.
There are 119 rows in the X3p_per_100, X3pa_per_100, and X3p_Percent columns that are listed as NA. This is due to the fact that the 3 point line was being introduced into the NBA in the early 1970s. So there are some seasons that there is no 3pt line and there are some teams who chose to not attempt 3s initially when the 3pt line was introduced.
There are also 1471 rows labeled as implicit. However, I expect a great majority of these come from the fact that there weren’t 30 NBA teams until the early 2000s. So for the seasons in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, there are fewer teams and less data.
There are empty groups in the form of there being 9 missing NBA playoff teams in the 2023-24 season and 16 missing playoff teams in the 2022-23 season.

The insight I gather from this is that it is important to check your data for all forms of missing data. This is significant since some of the data is intended to be missing, but some of it can negatively impact your analysis. This would lead me to ask: When is it okay to have missing data and when is it not?
Here I am going to define what I would consider to be an outlier for teams when it comes to statistics related to shooting 3pt shots.
I have defined any team that makes less than two 3pt shots per 100 possessions to be an outlier when considering 3pt analysis. This mostly cuts out NBA teams in the 1970s, 1980s, and a few in the early 1990s.

The insight I gather from this is that the 3pt shot was not very popular initially and actually took nearly 2 decades before teams even started to take a decent amount of 3pt shots. This is significant because it supports my decision to label teams that make less than two 3s per 100 possessions as outliers. I would be curious to know: What caused NBA teams to start shooting significantly more 3s?
