Hey y’all! I’m Diego Martinez, a senior Business Analytics student at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), set to graduate in Summer 2026. Right now, I’m living in Houston, but I’ve spent most of my life in San Antonio with a good chunk of time in the small town of Cameron, TX.
When I’m not buried in data or coursework, you can catch me at as many NBA games as possible. I’m a huge Spurs fan and am just a fan of the game in general. I also love hitting up concerts, especially any Latino artists when they’re in town. Music is a big part of my life beyond just listening as I enjoy music production in my free time. When I need a break from screens, I like also love to paint!
I’m currently pursuing my Bachelor of Business Administration in Business Analytics at UTSA, expecting to graduate in Summer 2026. Throughout my time here, I’ve taken a solid range of courses that have built up my analytic skills:
Core Analytics Courses:
These courses have given me hands-on experience with everything from data cleaning and visualization to building predictive models and managing databases.
Curbside Lead at H-E-B
Houston, TX
I currently work as a curbside lead at H-E-B, where I help manage operations and ensure customers have a great experience using our service. It’s taught me a lot about process optimization, team coordination, and customer service which are all skills that I believe translate well into the analytics world.
Before H-E-B, I worked at my aunt’s Mexican restaurant as a waiter when I was younger. It was my first taste of the business world and gave me an appreciation for small business operations and the challenges that come with running a family business.
I’ve been working with R since I started taking analytics courses at UTSA. I’ve become familar using packages like dplyr, ggplot2, and tidyr for data manipulation and visualization.
As for data mining, I’ve mainly focused on classification and regression techniques so far. I’m currently diving deeper into data mining concepts this semester and looking forward to exploring more advanced methods like clustering and association rules.
Python
I’m familiar with Python and have used it for data exploration, but I
wouldn’t say I have serious knowledge yet. It’s something I’m continuing
to build on.
SQL
I have some exposure to SQL, but I’m still developing my skills in this
area.
Excel
I’d say I have intermediate Excel skills. I’ve taken a course that
covered formulas, pivot tables, and other advanced features that are
super useful for quick data analysis.
Tableau
I’m using Tableau for the first time this semester in my visualization
course. So far, it’s been an amazing tool for creating interactive
dashboards.
SAS Enterprise Guide
I’ve also worked with SAS Enterprise Guide in previous coursework, which
gave me exposure to another powerful analytics platform.
My goal is to work my way into H-E-B’s corporate analytics division, where I can apply what I’m learning to real business problems. Beyond that, I’m excited to use my degree to help grow my two aunts’ restaurant businesses and expand my dad’s real estate business. Analytics has so much potential to make a real impact, and I’m looking forward to putting these skills to work for my family and future employers.
