Why Estimate Timber?

For the forestry industry, knowing the yield of a forest is money.

  • The Problem: Cutting down trees to measure volume is destructive and slow.
  • The Solution: We need to estimate volume based on easy measurements: Girth and Height.

Our new Shiny App allows foresters to make these predictions instantly in the field.

The Algorithm (Model)

We utilize the standard trees dataset in R, which contains measurements for 31 Black Cherry Trees.

We fit a linear regression model: Volume = Intercept + (Coef1 * Girth) + (Coef2 * Height)

Here is a summary of the data used to train the model:

Min. 1st Qu. Median Mean 3rd Qu. Max.
  10.20 19.40 24.20 30.17 37.30 77.00

Visualizing the Correlation

There is a strong correlation between Girth and Volume, which makes our predictor highly accurate.

Conclusion

The Tree Volume Estimator is:

  • Fast: Instant calculations.
  • Accurate: Based on verified data.
  • Easy: Simple slider interface.
