1 . CASE DISTRIBUTION OVER TIME

1.1 . Overall trend

As of Week 9 of 2026, diphtheria transmission in Kano State remains ongoing. Weekly reported cases increased slightly to 236 cases in Week 9, compared with 184 cases in Week 8. Despite this increase, case numbers remain lower than those observed earlier in 2026 (275 cases in Week 6 and 247 cases in Week 7), suggesting that transmission may be stabilizing following the earlier decline. Importantly, no deaths were reported in Week 9, continuing the pattern observed in Week 8. Although transmission persists, the absence of reported deaths and the moderate case counts indicate a possible improvement in outbreak severity and clinical outcomes.

2 . CASE DISTRIBUTION ACROSS LGAs

2.1 . Map of Kano State

The spatial distribution in Week 9 of 2026 shows that transmission remains concentrated in a limited number of urban and peri-urban LGAs, particularly those surrounding Kano Municipal. While a small increase in weekly cases was observed compared with Week 8, the geographic pattern remains consistent with previous weeks. Most cases continue to occur within a cluster of densely populated metropolitan LGAs, while many peripheral LGAs reported no new cases.

2.2 . Case distribution in the Top 15 LGA over time

Up to Week 9 of 2026, Ungogo, Nasarawa, Dala, Kumbotso, Gwale, and Fagge continue to report the highest cumulative numbers of diphtheria cases, confirming their role as persistent transmission hotspots since the beginning of the outbreak.

During Weeks 8-9 of 2026, transmission remained concentrated in a small number of high-burden LGAs. Ungogo continued to report the highest number of cases (111 cases over the two-week period) and the highest attack rate (16.4 per 100,000). Nasarawa, Dala, Gwale, Kumbotso, and Fagge also reported substantial numbers of cases, confirming continued transmission in densely populated urban LGAs. Importantly, no deaths were reported during Weeks 8-9, resulting in an overall CFR of 0% for this period.
