Project Title

Industrial and Environmental Risk Clusters in the Gironde Region

This project investigates how industrial risks are distributed across the Gironde region, focusing on clusters of ICPE sites, pollutant-emitting industries, pipelines, and former industrial activity.

Research Goals

The goal of the research project is to:

Research Questions

The project addresses four main research questions:

  1. Spatial Distribution
    • How are industrial and environmental risk facilities (ICPE, IREP, pipelines) distributed across Gironde?
  2. Clustering
    • Do pollutant-emitting installations cluster near ICPE sites or hazardous-material pipelines?
  3. Historical Overlap
    • Is there a spatial overlap between current pollutant-emitting sites and former industrial sites?
  4. Risk Density and Discharges
    • Do communes with the highest density of ICPE and IREP also show the highest environmental discharges?

Research Data

This project uses several publicly available open-data sources related to industrial risks and environmental infrastructures in the Bordeaux–Gironde region.
The main datasets are listed below:

1. Former Industrial Sites (CASIAS) – Bordeaux Métropole

Dataset containing geolocated information on former industrial or potentially contaminated sites.

2. Pipelines and Fluid Transport Networks

Dataset describing underground and above-ground pipelines transporting various fluids.

3. Industrial Facilities Reporting Pollutant Emissions (ICPE + IREP)

National datasets listing industrial installations that emit pollutants into air, water, or soil.

4. Geographic Base Maps (GADM – France Administrative Boundaries)

Used for loading and plotting the Gironde department.

Datasets Used

  • Former industrial sites and service activities
    • Historical dataset of discontinued industrial activity
  • Pipelines (hazardous materials)
    • Linear network showing transport of hazardous substances
  • Pollutant-emitting facilities (IREP)
    • Industries reporting emissions to air/water
  • ICPE (Installations Classées)
    • Regulated industrial facilities (active or ceasing activity)

Planned Data Operations

  • Mapping the spatial distribution of all risk datasets
  • Creating risk density maps of pollutant-emitting facilities
  • Performing buffer analysis around hazardous-material pipelines
  • Comparing current vs former industrial sites to detect overlap
