1. Introduction

Research Question / Objective

To identify significant predictors of glycemic control, measured by HbA1c levels, among patients with Type 2 diabetes.

A simulated dataset of 1,000 patients was generated to reflect realistic clinical characteristics.

The dataset includes:

  • Age (years): Continuous variable, normally distributed with mean ≈ 55 years.
  • BMI (categorical): Four categories — underweight, normal, overweight, obese.
  • Duration of Diabetes (years): Continuous variable, mean ≈ 10 years.
  • Physical Activity (hours/week): Continuous variable, mean ≈ 3 hours.
  • HbA1c (%): Continuous outcome variable, constrained between 4% and 14%, with median ≈ 7.5%.

This dataset was prepared by coding BMI as a factor and summarizing distributions to ensure realistic ranges and variability.

12. Interpretation & Conclusion

Result interpretation

  • The final multiple linear regression model indicates that age, BMI, duration of diabetes, and physical activity are significantly associated with glycemic control (HbA1c levels).
  • Age: Each additional year of age is associated with a 0.05% increase in HbA1c (95% CI: 0.04, 0.05), after controlling for other variables in the model.
  • Duration of Diabetes: Each additional year of living with diabetes is associated with a 0.11% increase in HbA1c (95% CI: 0.09, 0.12), after adjusting for other variables in the model.
  • BMI: Being Obese individuals have 1.1% higher HbA1c levels (95% CI: 0.89, 1.2) compared to those with normal weight, after controlling for other variables in the model. Overweight individuals show a 0.37% increase in HbA1c (95% CI: 0.22, 0.52), while underweight individuals have 0.52% lower HbA1c levels compared to normal weight (95% CI: −0.73, −0.30), after controlling for other variables in the model.
  • Model Fit: The model explains approximately 41.2% of the variance in HbA1c levels (Adjusted \(R^2\) = 0.412), suggesting that these clinical factors are collectively strong predictors of glycemic control.

Conclusion

Older age, higher BMI, and longer duration of diabetes are all significantly associated with higher HbA1c levels.
