Study Information

Data Source: Wildland Firefighters Survey in Chile (February 2025)

Background:

Wildland firefighters in Chile face significant occupational hazards, including extreme heat exposure, smoke inhalation, physical exertion, and prolonged use of heavy protective equipment. These environmental and occupational factors pose unique risks to firefighter health and safety. This study surveyed 357 wildland firefighters across Chile to characterize the demographic profile of this workforce and assess their perceptions of how various environmental exposures impact their health.

Understanding WLFFs’ self-reported concerns about environmental factors and health outcomes is essential for developing evidence-based interventions, improving workplace safety protocols, and informing occupational health policies. The findings from this dashboard can guide resource allocation for protective equipment, training programs, and health monitoring initiatives.

Results:

The study population consisted primarily of male WLFFs (98.3%), with the largest age group being 30-39 years. Regarding environmental health perceptions, air pollution/smoke and air temperature were identified as the most concerning factors affecting firefighter health, with the majority of respondents reporting moderate to extreme impacts. Physical exertion and radiant heat were also frequently cited as significant health concerns.

In terms of health system impacts, respiratory health was the most commonly reported concern among firefighters, followed by musculoskeletal and cardiovascular health. Mental health concerns were also notably prevalent. These findings underscore the multifaceted nature of occupational health risks in wildland firefighting and highlight the urgent need for comprehensive health monitoring programs, improved respiratory protection, heat stress management protocols, and mental health support services for this vulnerable workforce.
