Introduction

This report presents eight data visualizations exploring global development trends from 1952 to 2007 using the gapminder dataset. The graphics cover health, wealth, and population across continents, demonstrating key principles of effective data communication.

Figure 1: Life Expectancy by Continent Over Time (Line Plot)

This line plot shows the average life expectancy for each continent from 1952 to 2007.

Figure 2: GDP per Capita vs. Life Expectancy in 2007 (Scatter Plot)

Each point represents a country in 2007, sized by population.

Figure 3: Total Population by Continent in 2007 (Bar Chart)

Asia has the largest population among all continents.

Figure 4: Distribution of Life Expectancy by Continent (Box Plot)

Box plots reveal variability and outliers in life expectancy across continents.

Figure 5: GDP per Capita Trajectories for Selected Countries (Small Multiples)

Six countries show divergent economic paths over time.

Figure 6: Correlation Between Key Indicators (Heatmap)

Strong positive correlation between GDP and life expectancy.

Figure 7: Change in Life Expectancy from 1952 to 2007 (Dumbbell Chart)

Improvement varies widely across countries.

Figure 8: Interactive Explorer – Life Expectancy vs. GDP (Interactive Plot)

Hover over points to see country details. Use legend to filter continents.

Conclusion

This portfolio includes eight polished visualizations of at least five distinct types (line, scatter, bar, box, heatmap, dumbbell, small multiples, and interactive plot). Each graphic adheres to best practices: clear titles, labeled axes, and meaningful insights. The interactive plot enables deeper exploration, fulfilling all requirements of the final project.
