AMD vs. Intel Sentiment Analysis
A Tale As Old As Time…
This classic match-up came to mind immediately, and I had a really hard time getting the data I needed for this project. I am now banned (hopefully temporarily) from reddit and x for accidentally exceeding rate limits, so I chose two products in the same price range on Amazon and scraped comments.
Question 1
What are the emotional sentiments towards each brand, respectively?
I performed an analysis of all of the relevant words collected and here are the results:
Most of the sentiment was fairly close for most categories, but there is obvious bias for positive comments surrounding Intel products. Perhaps Intel owners are simply more expressive.
Question 2
What words are most closely associated with each brand, respectively?
I performed this analysis on words appearing at least only 15 times to get a wider view of the sentiment:
As you can see, the words “fast” and “hot” appear frequently on the intel list while AMD has the words “support” and “cheaper” excusively. Both brands have their fair share of issues.
Question 3
What was the post-launch sentiment towards each product?
I created an Average Sentiment Over Time grouping posts by month and finding the sentiment score between -1 and 1 using positive words as +1 and negative words as -1.
These products did not launch at the same time, but you can observe distinct differences in the characteristics of the sentiment towards each brand. The Intel sentiment was fairly consistent at first and became more erratic as time progressed, while the AMD sentiment shot up high quickly and then experienced some early-market fluctuation. The consistency of the positivity score for Intel is notable for the first year or so.
