Has anyone received something related or from this email address? Thank you so much! |

Assignment 8: Reddit Post Sentiment Analysis: Coca-Cola and Pepsi
Question 1
“Do people have a more positive outlook of Coca-Cola vs Pepsi?”
I find this interesting because both of these brands are similar in the products they sell but their advertising campaigns and their interaction with the public is not. If we can figure out what kind of fan base these 2 soda brands have and understand the overall outlook that people have on the companies, then we can better ascertain what kind of advertising campaign and brand image is more favorable to the public. This can inform businesses and individuals on how to make a brand that has a positive outlook from the public.
Data Used
I used Reddit’s JSON API to get text from reddit posts for r/cocacola and r/pepsi. Each row of the data shows the text from one post on a particular subreddit. Since the data I collected shows the subreddit that each post was made on, we can see how the public perception of the 2 brands differs. This way we can provide evidence towards or against our question about which soda brand has a more positive outlook from the public. Below is a few rows of the data:
Sentiment Analysis
Here I made a bar chart that shows the different common words used for each subreddit. The bars indicate how many times each word showed up in that subreddit’s posts for the data I collected. For example, the word “bad” showed up 24 times in the data for the cocacola subreddit. The graph shows that Pepsi has less of a good public outlook, at least when the subreddit is concerned since the amount of positive words is more limited for Pepsi. It is also clear that the negative words used for Pepsi appear to be harsher. There are quite a few posts saying “bad” for Coca-Cola, but overall it seems that Pepsi has less of those positive words coming up in the subreddit posts. In terms of our question, I would say that this graph is evidence for the claim that Coca-Cola has a slightly better public outlook than Pepsi.
Question 2
“What words do people associate more with Coke vs Pepsi?”
Learning about associations with these two brands will help inform us on what kinds of brand attributes are sticking with customers. It especially helps those in the marketing department to understand what brand building initiatives are the most effective. If the company really excels in the attribute of “surprise” or “joy,” then the company would want to continue to sustain that part of the brand. But if those attributes are lacking in the brand’s public perception and the company wants to be more surprising, the company may want to assess its brand building to see if they should shift their advertising initiatives to a more surprising direction.
Data Used
I used the same Reddit data to help answer this question. The reddit data has lots of text that we can break up by word so that we can analyze the most commonly used words and associations with the 2 brands.

Sentiment Analysis
The graph shows how many times a word associated with a certain sentiment such as “anger” showed up in the data, split up by the 2 subreddits. When it comes to sadness, surprise, and trust, there is little to no difference at all. Pepsi has more words associated with anger and anticipation, while Coca-cola has more words associated with disgust, fear, negative, positive, and joy than the Pepsi data. The biggest differences are in positive and joy, where Coca-cola has a decent amount more words on the subreddit associated with those sentiments. You could say this is evidence that people associate Coca-cola with more positive things, but I think the graph also shows that Coca-cola just has more words associated with it that are emotional in general. Joy, positive, disgust, and fear are a mixture of emotions so I would say that when it comes to our question, this graph is evidence for the claim that people associate more emotionally motivated words with Coca-cola rather than Pepsi.
Question 3
“How has the sentiment around Coke and Pepsi changed over the past few months?”
Understanding how the sentiments for Coca-Cola and Pepsi have changed over time will help inform us on how the brands are trending in terms of their popularity and positive outlook by the public. If one or both of the companies are trending in a certain direction in terms of their public perception, a smaller soda manufacturer might be able to cut into the market easier. Another thing is that Pepsi or Coke might want to change up their strategy and put more or less money into advertising and marketing if the other company is struggling with public perception.
Data Used
I used the same Reddit data to help answer this question. The reddit data shows the date of the posts, and the posts span over the last 5 months (July-November), so we can look at sentiment over time.

Sentiment Analysis
The graph above records the sum sentiment score by day for the past 5 months. If the line dips a lot that means that a lot more negative things were said on that day, while if the line jumps, a lot more positive things were said on that day for the subreddit posts. I also added trend lines so you can get a general idea of how the sentiment has changed over time. Both brands appear to have stagnant sentiment trend lines but a little more variation in the day by day scores. Late August shows a multiple day dip for Pepsi which could indicate that the brand had some kind of hit from public opinion because of a controversy or product release. Also, Coca-cola had a lot of negative posts in a day during late September which could mean some kind of news got out about Coca-cola that people really got mad about or took badly to. The last thing that sticks out is the day in early November that saw a lot of positive posts for Coca-cola. This could also be from some type of news but the public took to the news in a positive way. Overall, I would say that both of the subreddits have pretty fluctuating sentiment scores. This graph provides evidence contrary to our question about sentiment changing over time. The sentiment mostly fluctuates in a consistent pattern and may have a spike here or there because of a controversy or new product release. I think this graph tells us that the two reddit pages get all kinds of positive and negative posts which has not changed much in the past 5 months. There is not one direction that one or both of the subreddits are trending in when it comes to sentiment.
