Introduction

The Great British Bake Off is an iconic baking show where amateur bakers from the United Kingdom of all ages and professions compete! Each series has 10 episodes and contestants are eliminated after each episode. Most series had 12 contestants aside from series 10 which had 13 contestants. We analyzed series 8 through 13 by scraping Wikipedia pages on each series and creating two main data sets. We wanted to investigate whether there were any noticeable patterns in the types of contestants which were chosen to be on this show.

Our aim was to answer four main questions:

  1. Is there a difference in contestants’ ages based on their gender?

  2. Is there a difference in contestants’ types of occupation based on their gender?

  3. Are contestants more likely to come from certain regions of the United Kingdom?

  4. Is there a relationship between winning the competition and the rankings or number of Star Baker awards a contestant earn throughout the series?

Distribution of Ages by Gender
Discussion

This side-by-side boxplots illustrates the difference in the contestants’ ages by gender. We found that the median age for males was slightly higher (34) compared to the mean age for females (31) with a difference of 3 years. The overall range of ages for females was significantly wider with a high of 72 years old and a low of 19 years old. In comparison, the range for males was narrower with a high of 56 years old and a low of 19 years. There were also high outliers in the data for females with four contestants exceeding or at the age of 60. The interquartile range for males was wider than for females suggesting that the middle data points for males is spread further apart and so has more variability.

Proportions of Gender Across All Series
Discussion

This stacked bar plot shows the proportion of each gender among contestants in each series. Overall the proportions are roughly equal, with the same number of male contestants and female contestants. The only exception is series 10, which had one more female contestant than male. This discrepancy occurred because series 10 had 13 contestants instead of the usual 12 meaning the proportions could not be split evenly.

Final Rankings by Gender
Discussion

This stacked bar plot shows the proportion of each gender among contestants at each final rankings across all series of the show. We saw in the previous graph that the ratio of female to male contestants were almost exactly the same in each series, however, here we see
differences in the final rankings achieved by contestants depending on their gender. Interestingly, although a higher proportion of male contestants have won the entire series compared to female contestants, a higher proportion of female contestants have been runner-ups. A higher proportion of female contestants placed in the middle rankings (7-9th), and a higher proportion of male contestants placed in the bottom rankings (10-12th).

NOTE: For each series, we were given information on the two runner-up contestants, meaning that two people were recorded as finishing both second and third. As a result, our graph does not have a separate 3rd place ranking. Series 10 was the only series to have 13 contestants instead of 12 meaning we can not make a meaningful statement on the proportion for the 13th place ranking.

Count of Occupation Types
Discussion

In general, we observed that most contestants were either retired or not employed. This includes people who are stay-at-home parents and students. The next most common type of occupation was finance/banking/business which is perhaps surprising given that baking has not much in common with those professions. The least common type of occupation was artist and people who worked for the government.

Occupation Type by Gender
Discussion

This is a population pyramid which shows the number of contestants in each type of occupation depending on their gender. We see three types had the exact same number for both genders. These were finance/banking/business, retired/not employed, and medicine/healthcare. Interestingly, these categories were also the most common occupations among contestants in general. Some occupations appeared to be more skewed towards male such as research scientist/scientist/engineer and service, while others were more skewed towards female such as assistant and government.

Map of the United Kingdom
Discussion

This choropleth map shows the hometowns of the contestants from UK with darker regions signifying higher counts of contestants. We discovered that the majority of the contestants came from England with 89%. Only 6 out of 73 contestants came from Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales. The sizes of the points on the graph correspond to the number of contestants from each city. The largest point on the map corresponds to London which is the capital city of England. We found that 17 contestants came from London meaning more people came from London than the other three countries combined. The next most common city was Bristol with just 3 contestants. We can also see that many contestants in Northern England have come from the same cities/towns whereas in Southern England (aside from London), contestants come from a wider variety of cities/towns as illustrated by the many smaller points.

Technical Challenge Rankings of Winners
Discussion

Technical challenges occur every epsiode. Contestants must create a baked good based on limited instructions and are ranked. This is a collection of six line charts which illustrate every rankings the winners of the show received for every technical challenge. Aside from Syabira and Rahul, after episode 6 until the end, every winner ranked at least 4th place or above. There is no general trend on the rankings of the technical challenge (i.e. no significant improvements during the show). Sophie stayed consistently in the higher rankings and so did Giuseppe aside from the first challenge where he placed 10th.

Discussion

We have two bar chars which illustrate the number of Star Baker Awards earned. The first shows the number of Star Baker Awards earned by every contestant. We can see that many contestants who did not win the show, earned these awards as well. Surprisingly, we see that Steph won the award four times but did not win the show. We also see Steven and Jurgen won the award three times but also did not win the show. Therefore, the number of Star Baker awards earned does not definitively mean the contesant will win the entire show.

The second bar chart shows the number of Star Baker awards earned by the winners of each series. This award is given to the best baker in the “showstopper” contest, which is the most complex challenge that requires bakers to perform best in both techniques and design. Most winners won this award at least twice. David, however, never received this award while Syabira won the award three times. Therefore, although winning the award does not mean a contestant cannot win the show, it seems more likely for a contestant to win, given that they received the award at least twice.

Note, we only included bakers who earned the award at least twice. This is because there were many other contestants who had won this award once and therefore the graph would be too large.

Brief Summary

Our aim was to answer 4 main questions:

  1. Is there a difference in contestants’ ages depending on their gender?

We found that there did appear to be some differences depending on their gender. Overall, female contestants had a smaller mean age but a significantly wider range and male contestants had a smaller interquartile range.

  1. Is there a difference in the contestants’ types of occupation depending on their gender?

We found that the most common types of occupation were evenly split among the genders but we did find some differences. For example, there were more female contestants in manager/leader professions but more male contestants in research scientist/scientist/engineer professions.

  1. Are contestants more likely to be from certain regions of the United Kingdom?

We found that most contestants were from England with only a couple contestants from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. Within England, the most popular region was London with 17 contestants.

  1. Is there a trend between winning the entire competition and the rankings or number of Star Baker awards they earn throughout the series?

We found that the winners of the show ranked fairly highly after episode 6 until the end of the show. We found that the number of Star Baker awards a contestant earns throughout the series does not necessarily make them more likely to win the show. One winner did not win the award at all and in contrast, one contestant one four of the awards but did not win the show.

Creation of the Data Set

This data set was compiled by scraping Wikipedia pages on each series and also by manually entering any necessary data. We scraped the table under the “Bakers” heading which included the contestants’ names, ages, hometowns, occupations, finish (the final episode they appeared on), and place (their final ranking). Some contestants had nicknames they preferred to go by and were referred to by in other tables on the Wikipedia pages and so we split the contestants’ names into first name and last name, replacing the first name with their nickname if applicable.

Data on gender and occupation type was manually entered by entering information into a Google Sheets document and exported it as a csv file. The information on gender was included in the same “Baker” table under the column for contestants’ names but it was not possible for us to scrape this using the techniques we had and so we manually entered this information instead. We noticed that the occupations were very specific and so as we still wanted to investigate any relations between occupations and gender, we decided to manually group the occupations into broader categories.

The hometowns column in the table included different countries in the United Kingdom and so we created a country column and also a city/town column in order to ensure the table was tidy. We also wanted to find the latitude and longitude of each of these cities/towns. We found two data sets from simplemaps and geoportal, and also manually created a data set for any towns/cities that were missing values by using “latitude.to”.

We decided to focus on series 8 through 13 because the tables we scraped from the Wikipedia pages were not consistent and therefore meant we were unable to obtain all of the data in some series, such as information on the gender of the contestants.

Creation of the Data Set

This data set was also compiled by scraping Wikipedia pages on each series. This involved scraping tables for all 12 episodes for each series. We focused on the results of the technical bakes challenge and the overall results of the episode which state who was eliminated and who won Star Baker. While some contestants across the entire show share the same first name, there were no cases of two contestants with the same name within a single series. Therefore, we were able to record contestants’ names using only their first name or nickname.
