🖼️ Around Madrid

  1. Museos: Prado (classical art), Reina Sofia (modern art), Thyssen
  2. Palacio de Cibeles: climb up for great views of the city for only a few euros
  3. Plaza Mayor
  4. Gran Vía: Central shopping street
  5. Templo de Debod: Egyptian temple — gorgeous at sunrise/sunset
  6. Cafés:
    • Santagloria (great for using your laptop, almost always open)
    • Martin Tostador (best coffee, very close by but limited space and no laptops allowed)
    • Drømme Kaffe House (a great coworking vibe on weekdays)
    • Mansilla Libros y Café (great for reading)
  7. Neighborhoods:
    • Lavapiés — multicultural; Tapapiés festival until Oct 26 (€3.50 for a tapa + drink)
    • Malasaña — hip and lively
    • Sol — touristy but central
  8. Sunday Rastro Market: cheap treasures, fun atmosphere
  9. Just explore! Walk around central Madrid and discover things

  1. Retiro Park — very close by
  2. Casa de Campo — huge park not too far away from the center
  3. El Río — connects to other parks
  4. Parque del Oeste — palace views
  5. Sabatini Gardens - the palace gardens

🚆 Day Trips

  1. Toledo — 1 hour away, beautiful historic city
  2. Segovia — ancient Roman aqueducts and stunning architecture
  3. El Escorial - beautiful monastery with great hiking in a cute city (1 hour away by train)

👗 Weather & Typical Clothing

  • Slightly more formal than the U.S., but still pretty casual by European standards.
  • I’ve been wearing shorts and t-shirts for running, but pants and sweaters/light jackets during the day.

How to get here: 1. Cercanías to Atocha → 5-min walk to my hosue from Atocha 2. Bus from airport → Atocha

I have an extra set of keys so you can move around freely.

  • Fully equipped kitchen — use anytime!
  • I’ll stock food for both of us, but feel free to buy anything you like.

🛏️ Sleeping Arrangements

  • I have a super comfy couch with cozy blankets for you to sleep on!

🏋️ Gym

  • I can bring a guest — join me anytime.

🏫 University

  • You’re welcome to come to Uni with me to read/work (might be a little boring though 😅).

🗣️ Language

  • In my experience, not much English spoken in Madrid
  • Most of my friends are bilingual, so we mix Spanish and English but they’ll switch if needed!
  • App SpanishDict is super helpful.

💳 Metro Card

  • Public transport’s a bit pricey for tourists but we’ll figure it out when you arrive.

🎒 What to Bring

  • Nothing in particular! I have an extra towel and you’re welcome to borrow anything of mine.
