METHODS
Bird occurrence records were obtained from the BirdLasser database through direct collaboration with the BirdLasser development team and scientists from BirdLife International.
Records were compiled for all Southern African Bird Atlas Project 2 (SABAP2) species with a full-protocol reporting rate (FP RR%) greater than 1%, excluding pelagic seabirds and vagrant species.
The dataset covered the period 2022–2025 to provide a temporal buffer around the dates of BioiSCape remote sensing data acquisition, thereby ensuring a more complete representation of species occurrences within the study window.
Each species-specific BirdLasser file was spatially filtered to retain only records located within pentads (5-minute grid cells) where the corresponding species has confirmed SABAP2 occurrences.
This filtering was implemented using a custom R workflow that queried the SABAP2 API to retrieve valid pentads for each species and removed any records falling outside these verified ranges.
The cleaning process ensured that all retained BirdLasser records were geographically and temporally consistent with SABAP2 distributions, improving spatial accuracy and data reliability for subsequent analyses.
Because data availability varied across species, with some datasets covering all of South Africa and others restricted to the Western Cape, an additional spatial filtering step was applied to restrict all records to the defined geographic extent of the study area (Western Cape Province).
BirdLasser records classified as ‘Dead’ (e.g., roadkill, poisoning, wire collision) were excluded from analyses, as they do not represent active occurrence or habitat association. Only records categorized as ‘Alive’ were retained for richness and diversity analyses to capture for true presence data.
The Reporting Rate was extracted from the SABAP2 species list record.
Species guild and trait information were compiled from two primary sources:
Data on endemism, taxonomic classification (order, family), dietary guild, biogeographic realm, regional and global Red List categories, ecological groupings, population trends, and migratory status were obtained from a South African avifaunal database provided by Alan Lee.
Additional trait data describing habitat, habitat density, trophic level, trophic niche, and primary lifestyle were extracted from the AVONET database (Tobias et al., 2022) using BirdLife International species information as the taxonomic reference. These attributes were used to classify species into functional guilds and characterize ecological strategies relevant to habitat structure and resource use.
