Derek Olivares is a 2001 Highlands High School graduate and Troop 177 Eagle Scout from St Margaret Mary’s Parish. He is an active contributor to the community by holding a committee member position with Troop 177 BSA and attending UTSA. In training, 2001-2003, Olivares completed Advanced Electronics Technical core school, Fire Controlman A school, and Q-21 Data display C school in Virginia Beach, VA, ranking top of the class in his field of study.

At sea, first tour 2003-2008, Olivares served as Combat Systems Officer of the Watch for Combat Systems on USS Enterprise (CVN-65). He was the lead technician for Q-21 Data display system, facilitating 1678 hours of training through the Battle Force tactical trainer, and during Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Global War on Terrorism.

Ashore 2008-2011, Olivares was a field recruiter for 4 schools in South San Antonio, enlisting 25 Sailors. 2011-2012, he served as the NROTC scholarship coordinator for South Texas, handing out $5,400,000.00 in scholarships.

At sea, second tour 2012-2017, Olivares converted into the Tomahawk community and earned the position of Tomahawk Engagement Control Officer onboard USS James E Williams (DDG-95) where he executed cruise missile tactical qualifications.

Ashore 2017-2020, Olivares was the South East San Antonio Leading Petty Officer for NRD San Antonio, San Antonio, TX. His office held the responsibility for the recruitment of 13 schools in SE San Antonio and outlying communities.

At sea third tour 2020-2022, Olivares served onboard USS John S McCain (DDG-56), Yokosuka, Japan, for one year, and then his command homeport shifted to Everett, WA.

Derek Olivares was able to retire from the US Navy on May 31st, 2022. Being restless and wanting to take advantage of the free money for going to school, Olivares is currently a Senior at UTSA pursuing his Bachelor’s in Business with a major in Data Analytics and has partnered with the global real estate brokerage network Berkshire Hathaway and Fort Sam Houston Military Entrance Processing Station. His mission is to find opportunities for others that they cannot recognize themselves.

The only experience I have with R and Data mining are the standard classes that go along with a data analytics major.
