Hey, nice to meet you. I prefer to use my last name, McKellar, or Mick for short, instead of my first name. I’m really not a fan of how I look, I tend to use abstract or goofy profile pictures. Since you’re asking for an actual picture of me, I’ll match my discomfort with absurdity and include the goofiest selfie I could find on my phone.
Usually when I introduce myself I just use the short hand of calling myself a nerd. I like to learn, I like to solve puzzles, I like tinkering with technology, I like to play video games. With how things have been going this last year I’ll add to that the description of ‘tired’ - I’m a tired nerd. Between working full time, school part time, and my life outside of both those things becoming ever more chaotic I’m very ready to be done with this degree. I love data analytics and data science, just very out of steam.
My prior education is a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Before that, I attended community college trying to figure out my next step in life, during which I taught robotics after school for a middle school team. One of my student’s parents recommended his alma mater, Rose Hulman, and the rest is history.
Currently I work in IT, acting as the local head and presence across two business units. Before that, I was a Software Engineer. Between my schooling and those career positions I’ve found myself bouncing around the mid-west, so far living in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and now Wisconsin.
I don’t think I’ve had prior experience with R, but it’s hard to tell. Through my educational, hobbyist, and professional activities I’ve tinkered with a lot of programming, scripting, and markup languages. I could have interacted with R at some point and not realized it since it all sort of looks vaguely the same after a while. For example, while working on the module 2 material I found myself zoning out and defaulting to Python by mistake since the data frames seem to interact the same as they do in Pandas within Python.
In line with my previous answer, I’ve tinkered with a lot of software. That’s not to give the impression I’m that good, but I’ve been exposed to a variety. Actually, scatch that, if you count Power BI I’m pretty snazzy at that software.
