Logit Regressions

NGO Treatment: 50% people were primed with an increased monitoring of NGOS
Motivation Treatment: 50% of NGO untreated group were primed with the firm’s motivation for addressing carbon offset emissions. They received this priming question right the experiment.
The sub-windows titled “Check: Pilot Changes” contain the regressions divided into four subgroups:

Excluding 1st pilot: Removes 17% of the observations, as this first group only saw the budget in total numbers rather than as a percentage of sales. In addition, the effectiveness visual was slightly adjusted after that first group.
Excluding small firms (only Medium & Large firms are analyzed): Excludes respondents working in firms with revenue below USD 1 million. In 59% of the sample, there was a survey error for this group: they could not select a budget larger than USD 1,000.
Combined exclusion: Applies both restrictions (Excluding 1st pilot + Excluding small firms).

Continous Motivation: A motivation index was constructed to capture how motivations relate to WTP. The higher the index, the lower we expect WTP for attributes such as effectiveness or co-benefits. The index is defined as follows:

Value 1: Philanthropy, responsibility, or supporting the SDGs Value 2: Corporate voluntary mitigation or carbon management Value 3: Reputation/brand image or market differentiation Value 4: Efficiency or aligning global and local markets Value 5: None “Other” and “I don’t know” responses are set to missing (NA)

NGO Treatment Effect:

NGO monitoring priming significantly increases sensibility to the price, but it also significantly reduces the probability of opting out. Thus, firms are more likely to purchase offsets, but of lower price.
For firms with high negative publicity risk, the importance of effectiveness in the treated group is significantly higher than in the untreated group. Thus, priming respondents with monitoring risk increases the salience of effectiveness for firms with high negative publicity risk perceptions.
When analyzed separately, untreated respondents have a positive coefficient for the opt-out option, while treated respondents have a negative coefficient. So, opting out adds utility for untreated respondents but reduces it for treated respondents. In the untreated group, the opt-out option was chosen 12% of the time, compared to 8% in the treated group.
Overall, results are fairly consistent across the pilot checks.

Motivations Discussion:

Firms motivated by efficiency have a lower price coefficient than firms with other motivations. Also, effectiveness is more relevant for firms motivated by factors other than efficiency.
Environmental and social co-benefits are more relevant for firms motivated by philanthropy, responsibility, and market differentiation than for those motivated by carbon management or efficiency.
Opting out generates disutility for firms motivated by factors other than efficiency, and (although not significant) generates utility for firms motivated by efficiency.

Motivations Treatment Effect:

For firms motivated by philantrophy, motivation reminder reduces price coefficient.
For firms motivated by carbon management, motivation reminder significantly reduces the probability of opting out.
Continuous motivation: when building an index where higher values are expected to predict lower WTP for effectiveness and other social and environmental co-benefits, we indeed observe that higher index values are associated with lower WTP (more negative price coefficient).
Comparing primed and unprimed respondents: for primed respondents, price has a positive and significant effect, while for unprimed respondents it has a negative and significant effect.
