Family Violence

Family domestic violence (FDV) is a national issue and affects those across different socioeconomic demographics. However, this epidemic disproportionately affects women and is rooted in gender inequality and power imbalances. Following the implementation of lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21, reports of FDV incidents exacerbated in numbers and severity (Carrington et al., 2020). Australia has observed a 23% increase in the reports of FDV incidents than what was observed in 2017 (CSA, 2023).

This dashboard demonstrates:

  • The number of FDV incidents have generally increased after a rapid rise during the start of the pandemic in 2020-21.
  • Women are mainly target to these incidents in comparison to men.
  • Of those women affected by FDV, their perpetrators are overwhelmingly current or former partners.
