6.2 No Outside HQ has Top100 Branch Activities Issues

6.2.1 1. How Region and Risk Values are Determined

The fundamental point to understand is that region and risk level information exists only for the Top 100 MSAs. This happens because the Region data is explicitly loaded from a file named top100_regions.csv. This list is then joined to your main dataset.

As a result:

  • Any establishment (headquarters or branch) located inside one of these Top 100 MSAs will receive a Region value (e.g., “Pacific”, “Northeast”) and a risk level (e.g., “Low”, “Moderate”, “High”).

  • Any establishment located outside the Top 100 MSAs will have a missing value (NA) for its Region and risk level after the join. In the summary tables, this NA risk level is categorized as “Outside”.

6.2.2 2. The Logic for “Inside Region” vs. “Outside Region”

The case_when() statement in your code classifies every business activity into one of two scenarios based on the regions of the headquarters (parent_region) and the branch (Region). The rules are applied in this specific order:

  • An activity is classified as “Inside Region” if:

    • Both the HQ’s region and the branch’s region are unknown (NA). This effectively treats an activity between two non-Top 100 locations as an internal event.

    • The HQ and branch regions are known and are identical (e.g., both are in the “Pacific”).

    • A special case where the branch’s region is NA but the parent is categorized as being in the “Outside” region.

An activity is classified as “Outside Region” in all other cases, most notably if:

  • One location is inside the Top 100 (and has a region value) while the other is outside the Top 100 (and has an NA region).

  • Both locations are inside the Top 100 but are in different regions (e.g., “Pacific” to “Northeast”).

6.2.3 3. How This Logic Creates Systematic Zeros

The interplay between the limited data (Point 1) and the strict classification rules (Point 2) directly leads to the zeros in summary tables.

  • Zeros in the “Outside Region” Tables The Pattern: In tables for “Outside Region” activities, the cell for an “Outside” HQ and an “Outside” Branch is always zero.

    The Reason: An “Outside-to-Outside” activity means both the HQ and the branch are not in the Top 100, so both have NA for their region. According to the first and most specific rule in the case_when() logic, this scenario is always classified as “Inside Region.” Therefore, it is logically impossible for it to appear in a table filtered for “Outside Region” activities.

  • Zeros in the “Inside Region” Tables The Pattern: In tables for “Inside Region” activities, the cells for an “Outside” HQ and a branch with a defined risk level (Low, Moderate, or High) are always zero.

    The Reason: An “Outside” HQ is not in the Top 100 and has NA for its region. A branch with a defined risk level must be in the Top 100 and therefore has a real Region value. The case_when() logic sees a mismatch between NA and a real region name and classifies this as an “Outside Region” activity. Therefore, it’s impossible for this combination to appear in the “Inside Region” table.

7 Year of Analysis

All data was pulled between 2013-2022, 2012 data was pulled too in order to calculate the moves.

8 Move calculation and time span

The moves are calculated across an 11-year period, using data from 2012 to 2022 inclusive, as specified in the SQL query’s WHERE clause. A “move” is identified on a year-over-year basis for each unique establishment (identified by abi). The query uses LAG() and LEAD() functions to compare an establishment’s county (fips_code) in a given year with its county in the previous and next year. A record is kept if the fips_code changes between adjacent years, effectively capturing any annual change in an establishment’s location.
