Coal and other energy products are by far the most common commodity shipped though Texas. More than every other commodity combined, approximately 2,330,000 millions tons and 1,648,000 million tons respecitvely.
The counties in Texas east of the corridor are the origin of most shipping that moves though Texas. The next most common origin is Lousiana and then the counties west of the corridor in Texas. The corridor is a relatively uncommon origin for commodities.
The same pattern holds for destinations. This pattern is unsurprising considering the only major metropolitan area in the Western counties is El Paso. While Dallas, Austin, Houston, and San Antonio are all in the eastern counties.
Most flows are internal to their respective geographies. Unsurprising considering the size of these geographies. Note that all three corridor segments had to be combined to ensure the plot could be readable as the corridor is dwarfed by all other geographies.
The most common flow is the movement of coal and other energy products from west to east Texas. The next most common is energy products from Louisiana to east Texas.
The corridor is a net exporter to east Texas, though its most common import is east Texas. Coal and other energy products are the most common good for both.
The following plots show just the flows that have their origin and destination in the corridor respectively.
Overall the North section of the corridor is the largest exporter, mostly sending to east Texas and Louisiana. The central section is the next mostly trading with east and West Texas. The central section also has the lowest share fo Coal and other energy products, though they still are the majority.
The north section is the smallest importer on the corridor, while the central segment is the most common. Again east Texas dominates with west Texas being the only other major source of imports.
