West Kilbride Hedgehogs

Overview

A total of 8 hedgehogs have been captured in West Kilbride, of which 6 have been tagged. All but one of the tags have been recollected and processed using the GPS processing code. The deployment period varied between 7-16 days with an average fix success rate of 45.72%.

The below map shows all the recaptured hedgehog data and a breakdown for each individual given below.

WSK_2025_F_A

The first female caught and first hedgehog to be tagged. She was first found in the village’s cemetery and has subsequently been recaputed here multiple times. She is also the only hedgehog that has been recaptured multiple times. The tag was removed in the day due to an overdue health check and concern regarding tag battery life.

The hedgehogs was tagged for 16 nights. 543 valid fixes were recorded from a possible 925 (58.7% success rate)

Captured in the centre of the village but was not recaptured until the tag was removed. She was relocated using VHF twice in order to perform health checks. She was recaptured and had the tag removed in almost the exact location from where she was initially found.

The hedgehogs was tagged for 14 nights. 251 valid fixes were recorded from a possible 825 (30.42% success rate)

Small female initially considered to be quite young but met criteria for tagging. Day nest sought due to overdue health check. Found in nest with 3 young and left without disturbing further. Located and recaptured on the transect the following evening, and the tag was removed to prevent further disturbance. She was found as road kill the following morning.

The hedgehogs was tagged for 7 nights. 253 valid fixes were recorded from a possible 500 (50.6% success rate)

Only hedgehog found on the other side of the train tracks (an area described as having plenty of hedgehog sightings) and difficult to recapture. Was not seen on transect route again and only recaptured using VHF.

The hedgehogs was tagged for 12 nights. 341 valid fixes were recorded from a possible 703 (48.5% success rate)

Male captured in the centre of town and not recaptured on transect route. Health checks and tag removal completed using VHF.

The hedgehogs was tagged for 14 nights. 395 valid fixes were recorded from a possible 978 (40.39% success rate)

Male captured near to the house and noticed to have wandered further than the others, although after mapping his movements look more typical of a male hedgehog. The second recorded day nest was with four young hedgehogs.

The hedgehogs was tagged for 15 nights. 393 valid fixes were recorded from a possible 622 (60.18% success rate)
