Research Question

Does the percent of its GDP a country spends on education correlate to its level of gender inequality?

Hypothesis

Lower percentages of GDP spent on education are associated with higher levels of gender inequality.

Variable Descriptions

Dependent Variable: Gender Inequality

Definition: The index of gender inequality ranging from 0 to 1, whereas 0 correlates to no measured gender inequality and 1 signifies extremely high gender inequality based on three dimensions - reproductive health, empowerment and the females’ participation in the labor market.

Unit of Measurement: Country-level.

Independent Variable: Percentage of GDP Spent on Education

Definition: The percentage of its Gross Domestic Product spent on education.

Control Variable: Human Rights and Rule of Law Index

Definition: An index with values ranging from 0 (lowest number of violations) to 10 (highest level of violations) measuring the violations of human rights and the inadherence to international standards for due process in the legal system within a country’s government, using indicators such as the level of political violence against civilians, presence of an authoritarian or military rule, and the suspension or manipulation of constitutional law.

Summary:

Min. 1st Qu. Median Mean 3rd Qu. Max. NA's

Relationship Between Independent and Dependent Variable

Upon initial observation, there appears to be very weak negative correlation between the variables GDP Spent on Education and Gender Inequality, meaning I do not find strong support for my hypothesis: Lower percentages of GDP spent on education are associated with higher levels of gender inequality.
