Level 1: What’s the difference between a wage and a salary?
Level 2: If Jordan earns $24 per hour and works 15 hours, how much does Jordan earn?
Level 3: Alex earns $52,000 per year. If Alex works 40 hours per week for 52 weeks, what is their hourly rate?
Backup: Wage vs Salary Revision
Listen
Wage
Paid by the hour
Examples: $23.50/hour at Maccas, $25/hour at Woolies
You earn more if you work more hours
Salary
Fixed yearly amount
Example: Teacher earning $75,000/year
Same pay regardless of hours (within reason)
Backup: Practice Calculations
Your turn (silent)
A. Sam earns $22/hour and works 18 hours. Total pay?
B. Riley earns $26/hour and works 25 hours. Total pay?
C. Morgan earns $48,000/year. If they work 40 hours/week for 50 weeks, what’s their hourly rate?
Learning Goals
By the end of today’s lesson, you will be able to:
Define overtime and penalty rates
Calculate pay at time-and-a-half and double time rates
Solve real-world problems involving overtime
What is Overtime?
Watch and listen
Overtime: Work beyond normal hours
In Australia:
Normal work week: 38 hours
Overtime: Any hours over 38 per week
Why do workers get paid extra for overtime?
Penalty Rates
Copy these notes down
Penalty rates: Extra pay for working at difficult times
Common penalty rates:
Time-and-a-half: 1.5 × normal rate
Double time: 2 × normal rate
When penalty rates apply:
Weekends
Public holidays
Late nights/early mornings
Overtime hours
Calculating Time-and-a-Half
Listen then copy
Example: Emma works at KFC for $23/hour. On Sunday, she gets time-and-a-half.
Time-and-a-half rate = $23 × 1.5 = $34.50/hour
If Emma works 6 hours on Sunday: Total pay = $34.50 × 6 = $207
Your Turn: Time-and-a-Half
Your turn (silent)
A. Liam earns $24/hour at Coles. Calculate his time-and-a-half rate.
B. Using your answer from A, how much does Liam earn for 5 hours on Saturday?
Calculating Double Time
Watch and listen
Example: Jack works security at a rugby league match on a public holiday. Normal rate: $28/hour, but gets double time.
Double time rate = $28 × 2 = $56/hour
For a 4-hour shift: Total pay = $56 × 4 = $224
Watch and listen
Example (Overtime): Sarah works at a sports store. Normal rate: $25/hour
She works 42 this week (4 hours overtime)
Overtime rules:
First 38 hours: normal rate
Next 2 hours: time-and-a-half
After 40 hours: double time
How much is she paid?
Guided Practice
Let’s work together
Tom works at Hungry Jack’s for $22/hour. This week:
Monday-Friday: 35 hours (normal rate)
Saturday: 6 hours (time-and-a-half)
Calculate Tom’s total pay.
Independent Practice
Exercise 3.02 Q1-10 (a,c,e…)
Challenge Problems
1. Aisha’s normal rate is $24/hour. Last week she earned $1,152 total, working 40 normal hours. How many overtime hours at time-and-a-half did she work?
2. Would you rather work 10 hours on a public holiday (double time) or 15 hours on regular weekdays? Your rate is $25/hour. Show your working.
Real-World Scenario
Work in pairs
You work at a café near the tennis courts. Normal rate: $25/hour
