Data Driven Decision

It is well known that Data Driven Decisions are usually more efficient, faster, cheaper and yield better outcomes that “gut-feeling” Decisions. Some great examples are

  • Boost median favorability scores for managers in Google - Google uses people analytics to create a managerial course and improve manager skills
  • Real Estate Decisions at Starbucks - After hundreds of Starbucks locations were closed in 2008, StarBucks CEO decided to start making data driven decisions when deciding the location of a new StarBucks
  • Driving Sales at Amazon - Amazon uses a Recommendation System based on customers preferences to narrow down the products offered to specific customers. McKinsey estimated that 35% of Amazon Sales were due to the recomedation system alone

So the question is: Why do not use more data to make Data Driven Politic Decisions?

Here are some general economic indicators of Mexico, these standalone indicators are useful since they show how much GDP has relatively change from year to year, an how many people are facing poverty. Yet we need something else, is 30 million people in poverty so bad? Why if the population is of 300 million? That would mean only 10%, but what if the population is of 60 million, that would be 50%! Wee need to combine this economic data with demographics data, that is where the Demographics website comes in!

Demographics Webpage

Here is a sample of a Demographic indicator - births over years. This information in conjunction with economic indicators can be used to make better public policies. Furthermore see how there is a linear model predicting the value for 2030, this is incredibely useful since policies should not only be oriented in enhacing the present but the future!
