This is a preregistered replication of our experimental manipulation of relationship expectancies on dominant behavior. From the prereg:
Participants in the positive impact condition, as opposed to those in the negative impact condition, will be more likely to select the dominant, as opposed to non-dominant, message.
Participants will read about a hypothetical situation in which they
are managers in a mid-sized company. There is a tough task that needs to
be done, so they need to assign the task to their employee. The
employee’s performance on the task determines the bonus that the manager
receives (up to 2 Dollars). Additionally, they are informed that the
employee also has a 2 dollar pending bonus. The employee’s bonus,
though, will be entirely determined by the manager: They can decide to
grant none, some, or all of the pending 2 dollars to the employee based
in whatever way they wish on the employee’s performance. The employee
bonus does not affect the manager’s bonus at all.
To motivate the employee to do the task, managers can send one of two
messages: A dominant message and a non-dominant message.
After reading both messages, participants are assigned to one of two
conditions: The positive impact condition or the negative impact
condition. Accordingly, they will be asked to reflect on and write how
the employee might react [positively/negatively] to the dominant
message.
Next, they will choose which message to send to the employee.
Next, they will predict relationship and compliance outcomes for the
dominant message.
Next, they will be asked, if they could write any message they wanted to
the employee, what would they have written.
This will be followed by measures of manager-as-employee attitudes
projection (how they would react if they were the employee receiving the
dominant message), perceived norm (which message other participants
sent), and ease of reflecting on the [positive/negative] employee
reactions to the dominant message.
Next, they will indicate how much of the 2 Dollars pending bonus they
wish to grant to their employee for each rate of possible performance on
the difficult task.
Finally, they will complete a measure of competitive worldview.
There was one attention check. Let’s see how many people passed it.
