Introduction
The data I chose for this assignment was Box Office Mojo by IMDb. I was able to explore what factors contribute to a movie’s success. I find this interesting because I like movies and see how much money a movie grosses. During COVID, people stopped going to the movie theaters. But over this last year, it’s been in the news that more people are starting to go to the movies again.
Analysis
To answer my question about the highest-grossing movies and the distribution trends for April 2025, I will use web scraping to collect data from Box Office Mojo. This website provides reliable and up-to-date box office performance data, making it a suitable source for analyzing movie revenue and identifying patterns in movie distribution and release performance. During this web scraping, the variables I was focusing on was Movie title, Distributor, Gross revenue, Release date, Genre, Number of theaters. I was looking at the movies from January to April 2025.
Top 10 movies of 2025
Based on this graph, you can see the top 10 movies that have made the most money in 2025. The biggest movie of the year is A Minecraft Movie. You can see that it has performed significantly better. The runner-up is Captain America: Brave New World, which grossed less than half of a Minecraft Movie. The top 10 movies of the year are Minecradt, Captain America: Brave New World, Sinners, Mufusa, Sonic, Dog Man, Snow White, The King of Kings, Moana 2, and Nosferatu. Considering these are the top 10 movies of the year I do not think movies are making that much money.
Top 10 Movie Distributors that Made the Most Movies
Looking at this graph, you can see the companies that have made the most money from their movies. Warner Bros is in the lead with Walt Disney slightly behind. This bar graph shows the top 10 movie distributors ranked by their total box office earnings from January to April 2025. The longest bar belongs to Warner Bros., meaning they earned the most money in total from all their movies. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures is in second place. The other companies, like Sony Pictures, Universal, and Paramount, follow with smaller totals. Each bar’s length represents how much money the distributor’s movies made the longer the bar, the more they earned. The chart is a quick way to compare how successful different distributors were in terms of total gross revenue during this period. The larger movie companies are most likely making the biggest movies of the year.
Number of Movies Released by Distributors
This bar graph shows the top 10 movie distributors based on how many movies they released in 2025. Kino Lorber released the most movies over 35, far more than any other distributor. Paramount Pictures, A24, and Sony Pictures Releasing also released many films, around 18–20 each. Major studios like Disney are lower on this list, meaning they released fewer films during this time. There’s even one unnamed distributor (shown as a dash that released around 15 movies. Smaller or independent distributors may rely on volume, releasing many smaller-budget or niche films to stay competitive. Major studios may focus more on big-budget blockbusters, releasing fewer movies but aiming for high revenue per film.
Average Movie Grossing by Ranking
This graph shows the average gross revenue for movies based on their rank, with the highest-earning movies on the left and the lower-ranking ones on the right. The graph has a steep drop at the beginning, meaning the top-ranked movies made much more money than the rest. After the first few movies, the average gross revenue drops quickly and flattens out, showing that most films earn very little in comparison to the top ones. This graph shows that the top movies dominate the market in terms of earnings.

Looking at this graph you an see the ranking a movie is when it is released and how much money it makes. Looking at this graph it shows that a movie should be a box office hit and have a high ranking if it wants to make any money.
Top 10 Distributors that grossed the most money with their movies.
Looking at this you can see how much money each movie distributor has made with the movies they released each year. Warner Brothers grossed the most money with their movies with Walt Disney is second place. It is interesting to see the drastic difference between the second and third ranking movie companies. By looking at this graph I can see that it is hard to compete in the movie industry, when creating movies because those two companies get most of the wealth.
