It does not assume that the response variable itself is normally distributed in each group — only that residuals (after accounting for group means) are. It does not require knowing the full distribution of the data beyond the assumptions above.
ANOVA is fairly robust to violations of normality when: Sample sizes are large (thanks to the Central Limit Theorem). Group sizes are roughly equal.
