Service Overview
The Open Movie Database ( OMDb) is a RESTful dataset that gives you access to movies, TV shows, and episodes. While providing you with information on the year it was released. If you are a movie lover this website is perfect for you. perfect for film lovers, data analysts, or marketers interested in media trends. It can give you access to ratings, plot summaries, cast and crew etc.
Getting the API key
Now we have to get you access to your API key. You can find this on the official OMDb site: https://www.omdbapi.com/.
Once you open the link, you should see the words “API key” up at the top. Click on it and it should take you to the registration area. This is free, just enter your email and the API key will be sent to your email. The email should arrive in a few minutes. If not will make sure to check your spam and junk folders. If you have any problems, make sure you reach out to customer service.
Accessing API in R
In order for your API key to run, you will need to run the following packages. Tidyvers for all the tidy things. Jsonlite) for converting JSON data into data frames. Magrittr for extracting items from list objects using piping grammar, and httr for interacting with HTTP verbs.
Running you API
To create the URL, you need to have the API Key as well as a movie title. This example will load everything that has “Guardian of the Galaxy” in the title
This next section will create a function that creates a URL (not hardcoded) and retrieves the data from the URL. Then I will loop to pull more than one page of data.
