Help Verify Marine Wildlife Records – April 2025 BioBlitz

πŸ‘‹ Calling All Marine Life Enthusiasts!

We’re inviting MBA members and supporters to help us with a crucial part of our citizen science mission – verifying records from the April 2025 Big Rock Pool Challenge BioBlitz events.

Over the weekend, hundreds of rock pool observations were submitted from across the UK via iNaturalist, our chosen platform for recording marine life. With your help, we can ensure these observations are accurately identified and elevated to research grade β€” making them even more valuable for conservation, monitoring, and marine research.

🌐 What is iNaturalist?

iNaturalist is a global biodiversity recording platform where anyone can upload wildlife sightings, which are then identified by the community. Once a record has photos, a location, and is confirmed by multiple users, it becomes research grade and is shared with databases such as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).

You can create a free account at www.inaturalist.org, and you don’t need to be an expert β€” just help confirm species you recognise, or add helpful comments if you’re unsure.

πŸ” Get Started with Verification

All of the records submitted during our April 2025 BioBlitz events are part of this umbrella project:

🧠 Tips for Verifying Observations

  • Focus on records needing ID β€” these help the most!
  • Confirm IDs when you’re confident, or suggest improvements.
  • Leave a comment if you’re unsure or want to discuss a record.
  • Even a simple agreement with an existing ID helps move a record to research grade.

πŸ™Œ Thank You!

Your input makes a real difference β€” not just to our data quality, but to the learning journeys of participants all over the UK. Thank you for supporting marine citizen science!
