Class 12 Quiz

  1. How did the visuals of the climate legal actions article enhance the storytelling? (5pts)

  2. What would you do differently? With this graphic and with alternative graphic ideas you may have. (5pts)

Creating your visuals: making them sing

  • Get rid of chart junk

  • Information placement:

    • Make your title be a headline - tell the reader the main message

    • Subtitle can explain what they’re looking at, if needed

    • Put boring but necessary details in the notes

    • Use other strategies to make easier to read, such as: no sideways y axis title, use labels instead of legends

Creating your visuals: color

  • Use a diverging scale if you have values below and above zero

  • Use a sequential scale if all above (or below) zero

  • Use a categorical or qualitative scale when you have various categories that don’t have a numerical value

  • Generally for news just always go with colorblind safe
