Get rid of chart junk
Information placement:
Make your title be a headline - tell the reader the main message
Subtitle can explain what they’re looking at, if needed
Put boring but necessary details in the notes
Use other strategies to make easier to read, such as: no sideways y axis title, use labels instead of legends
Use a diverging scale if you have values below and above zero
Use a sequential scale if all above (or below) zero
Use a categorical or qualitative scale when you have various categories that don’t have a numerical value
Generally for news just always go with colorblind safe
