Week 10 Assignment

In this assignment, you should start by getting the primary example code from chapter 2 working in an R Markdown document. You should provide a citation to this base code. You’re then asked to extend the code in two ways:

Work with a different corpus of your choosing, and

Incorporate at least one additional sentiment lexicon (possibly from another R package that you’ve found through research).

First I need to install the packages that will be used to carry out the sentiment analysis.

One corpus of text that I would like to do some analysis with is one that I have been collecting regularly in my role as a teacher educator. At the beginning of each semester, I ask my students to respond to the following question: “In a few sentences, share some of your thoughts about math. Is it something that you like/dislike? Is there an aspect you like more/less than others? What have teachers you’ve had done with math that you found useful or frustrating?”I am personally very interested in analyzing this data to better understand my students. Since this data was originally submitted on Blackboard, I downloaded the responses and compiled them into a single document. I will copy and paste the 39 responses from this semester into R so that they can be placed inside of a dataframe.

With this subject you have to be on top of it. If you miss a lesson you will be behind as it builds on from the prior lesson. "Math in my opinion is an interesting subject, but challenging especially for myself. I am good with basic math and making math fun, however once letters are added into the equation and formula's I become easily discouraged. Math is definetly something that needs to be practiced, and step by step explainined, as we know once you miss one step in math it can completely throw off the correct answer. I have not had the best of luck with encouraging teachers whom made math or taught math in a useful way, most of my experiences were student to desk while i show you how to do the problem approaches and teaching styles, which is definetly something that I would consider frustrating.",
"Math was always a subject, that i always had a problem with or that didn't click with me. But after being reintroduce to it, I'm starting to see in different ways on how I use math on a daily. Basic math I'm okay with, when it comes to some equation problems I understand. But fractions long division, the new way to multiple is hard for me to understand. "Hell, my name is Jaquelinne I. Urbano. As part of my education major, I am required to take math courses. I believe that math is interesting and is everywhere we look, not just with numbers and shapes. However, personally, math has been a subject that I have struggled to comprehend since elementary school. I lived in a low income household with parents who did not speak english, therefore they were not able to help me with assignments. During my start of college in 2017, I began to understand some of the basic math concepts but that ony lasted for a short while. The more the semester progressed, the diffcult it was for me to understand a topic. Unfortunately, most of the math courses I took at the time such as algebra, calculus, mathematical physics, statistics and geometry were all courses that I did very poorly on. At the time my major was in occupational therapy and in order to be in the program I had to pass all entry exams , one of that being all math subjects and that was the only exam that I did not do well on. If I were to pick a topic that I do like is absolute value and number theory and my least favorite is fractions and measurement. In my personal experience most of my math teachers made me feel like I was not intelligent because I had difficulty comprehending simple math problems, and as a result I did not have any positive experience in the subject. I am always willing to be better myself and learn and I am looking forward to learn as much as possible in this course.",

"I am not a fan of Math, but I know it is necessary in our daily lives. Math is also a requirement for my double major, which is Early childhood Education and special Education. "In high school I hated math but taking some math classes at college helped me realize that I can enjoy math. The time when I get frustrated at math is when I don't understand how to do a certain problem and I have to deal with it so many times, but when I understand it I enjoy the process of solving the problem. An aspect that I don’t like about math is when I need to memorize a formula for a problem, there are a lot of formulas and sometimes I get confused about where and when to use them. "Math is something I've always felt a little less than neutral about. I tend to not like math because it is something I always struggle with, even though I understand it well in class. I'm pretty studious, so I will take notes, ask qiestions, and do alright on homework assignments, but I struggle when it comes to tests. For some reason math exams are much harder for me. I guess the aspect I like about math is that once you know what to do, the steps come naturally and flow into each other pretty well (it's just the starting parts that usually trip me up). I think I learn best when steps are explained in a few ways. I had a professor who, when I asked a questions about the steps, just explained them in the same way over and over instead of using diffeent words to explain the concepts. I don't think I'll struggle too much in this class, as like I said I'm pretty studious, but I'll try my best regardless!",
"Despite being conditioned to love math by the unsually large number of math professors/doers in my family, I actually really enjoy math and the way that there is a method or specific way of doing things. Following a series of formulas and steps and calculations makes me feel like im training my brain like any other muscle. I feel like I'm well versed and strong in most areas of math and itching to do more math calculations as (I feel) I've done little to none in my degree so far. However, high school honors geometry and I were not the best of friends, though I'm sure I'll follow easily with the basics. My only frustrations with teachers were when they a) were just not very comfortable/good with teaching topics or b) did not try to explain why and only explained that this is the way to do things and that's it. "I’ve struggled with math since the fourth grade. It always felt like we were being rushed through topics without enough time to fully understand them, and that made it frustrating. I don’t think I ever got the right support or scaffolding, so math started to feel overwhelming and stressful. Even now, I still get anxious about it. If there’s one thing I dislike most, it’s when teachers move too fast or assume everyone understands without checking in. I’ve found it helpful when teachers take the time to break things down step by step and let students practice at their own pace. But when they just teach it quickly and expect everyone to keep up, it makes it even harder. I also struggle when teachers explain something in only one way because if I don’t get it the first time, I feel lost. I think math would have been easier for me if there had been more patience, different ways of explaining things, and time to absorb the material.",
"I was okay with math throughout my early school years. I never liked it as a subject, so I don't have much memory about it in particular. However, learning math became more enjoyable for me when I started college. I was in a program that offered free tutoring for math, so I signed up, and it made math so much easier for me. "Math has always been something I was scared of. Before moving to USA, I remember always having strict and mean math teachers. Especially one of them would yell at students when we got something wrong. Also, they liked to call us to come up to the chalkboard and write our answers to the whole class. And if we got it wrong, she used to shame us in front of the entire class. Since then, I have been scared of math. Once I moved to New York, my teachers changed, and the math difficulty also changed. I started loving math, especially geometry. I remember sitting in the back of the class, and my teachers always checked on me because they knew that I would do work for someone else or they would copy me. I loved to use different formulas and solve things in geometry class. Now that I'm in college, I have mixed feelings about math. I enjoy taking math classes in some parts, but in others, I feel pressured to know much more information than I do. "Deep down I have always enjoyed math. I am naturally a problem solver and someone who looks for pathways--that is to say, I try to understand every element of a situation or experience, logically and emotionally; these qualities seem to align with mathematics, and would suggest that math is something that would make sense to me. However, somewhere along my academic career, I found that not to be the case; math became confusing, and I think my difficulties/negative feelings toward math began somewhere in high school when we started calculus. My organizational skills and continous studying had been more than sufficient for other mathematics courses, but calculus never made sense to me. The deeper we got into concepts, the more I fell behind. I would like to think the teacher was a good teacher, and I should have been more proactive to inform her of my difficulties. However, I will note that she was a very European mathematics-style educator, who had liked for problems and tasks to be completed her way. This was an added difficulty because it involved learning the basics the way she preffered as well. I think teachers who are open to exploring problem solving with students are able to provide their students with much freer understanding of mathematics; that is to say, when teachers can allow and support students in figuring out a problem successfully (even in their own way), the pressures of not understanding mathematics are minimized and math can become more enjoyable.",
"Math has always been something I’ve struggled with, and honestly, I’ve never liked it. Since I was a kid, it just hasn’t clicked for me, no matter how hard I tried. I’ve spent years trying to understand it, but it still feels confusing and overwhelming. I guess for some people, math just makes sense, but for me, it never has. "I like math because I find it fun to solve problems with numbers. It is satisfying to work through a problem and find the correct answer. My favorite part of math is algebra, as well as solving physics problems. I enjoy using formulas to solve different types of equations because it feels like solving a puzzle. One thing that has helped me in math is when teachers explain concepts step by step and give plenty of practice problems. It is useful when they show real-life applications of math, especially in physics, because it helps me understand why math is important. "My thoughts on math arent too good. I was never good at it and it isnt something I am the biggest fan of throughout my life. I am not bad at multiplying or dividing but anything other then the basic math skills, I am not good at at all. If I practice and have help in better understanding the topics i will be better at understanding it. One of the the math subjects that I enjoyed was when learning about graphs/ bar graphs/ line graphs. "Math was a subject that I struggled with in middle school, I had a hard time remembering steps to solve a problem and forgetting formulas. I disliked math because it was not my strongest subject. However, in high school, I became more open to learning and understanding math. I took Math 1006 at Brooklyn College in the winter, which was really challenging, but I pushed myself to do my best and learn it again after a long period. I'd like to push myself to learn math and make it a subject I'm comfortable with. I enjoyed some aspects of algebra, such as distributive property, simplifying algebraic expressions, and solving quadratic equations. Teachers have made it important to clearly explain how to find an answer, using visual explanations and presenting different approaches has been useful.",
"I didn't like math when I was young, but then I gradually became interested in it. When I was a kid, I always found math especially difficult because my logical thinking skills were not good and I couldn't remember those formulas. My math teacher at that time let us read books to learn those math concepts by ourselves. In class, he only explained the most difficult questions. And the whole learning process was very fast paced. "I think math is fascinating, especially because of how it involves problem solving and logical thinking. I enjoy the structure and patterns, particularly in algebra and geometry. Sometimes, though, I find that math can feel a bit rigid, which can make it harder to be creative or see real world connections. "I've never been fond of math because I've never been good at it. I always had issues understanding it, and the people who taught me often had very low patience, which made learning even harder. One of the most frustrating things teachers would do was calling on me when I didn’t know the answer and expecting me to solve the problem when I wasn’t sure what to do. That kind of pressure made math feel more stressful rather than helping me learn. "Math is a subject that I have always tried to remain optimistic about, after learning from Kindergarten through college. Some aspects that I do enjoy are step-by-step guides of a problem, as this always helps me to learn calmly while understanding each step to find the solution. More general topics that I enjoy and look forward to reviewing within this course are “Whole Numbers and Operations”, “Fractions, Ratios, & Proportions”, “Decimals & Percent”, and a few others that I feel confident to review and learn more from this semester. Some topics I don’t necessarily enjoy are Algebraic Thinking and Real numbers, but I am still staying positively optimistic and look forward to learning more as well. Some things my previous teachers have done when teaching math that I have found useful is how many have provided step-by-step visuals of how to solve a problem with examples, how to find the solution, and would integrate “Check My Work” that would allow both my peers and I to visually see how we can check our work to make sure we have found the correct solution. One thing I do truly find frustrating was experiencing some of my previous teachers review lessons at a very fast pace level, especially if we were running behind on coursework. I become more flustered during lesson reviews when it becomes fast-paced as I am trying my best to focus on the explanation of each example and review through the steps. Furthermore, I am looking forward to reviewing and learning more throughout this course as I build on my strengths while improving in areas that will challenge me.",
"When it comes to math, I don’t really enjoy it, but I know I can learn it when I put in the effort. I can memorize formulas, solve problems, and understand concepts with no problem, but it feels more like a chore than something I genuinely like. I prefer math topics with clear, step-by-step processes, like solving equations, because of the structured methods that I can follow. However, when it comes to more abstract topics, like complex word problems, I find them a bit more frustrating and harder to connect to real-life situations. Something that helps me when it comes to learning math,  is when teachers take the time to explain concepts in multiple ways. For example, breaking problems down into smaller, manageable steps, and providing plenty of examples that show how and why a method works. Being able to see the reasoning behind a concept makes it easier for me to understand rather than just memorizing formulas without context. I also do better when I can practice with similar problems and get step-by-step guidance before trying to solve them on my own.",
"Math is a very complex subject! I love/dislike math, I love math because it helped me get my current jobs in pharmacy and Starbucks, like for example being a cashier and calculating prescriptions and insulins, etc. There are aspects I love for example pemdas and linear equations, graphing and diagrams! I really do not like geometry. My teachers made math fun at times by creating useful memory codes or ways to remember formulas. I like math at times because it's so useful in everyday life! I also like to read problem questions and try to break the problem question down because it's like investigating and trying to discover the answer. Math is also important because we are able to help teach younger generations to learn and grow and have careers! Without math, there won't be cars, houses, bridges, etc because it all requires math and different key aspects of math!")

No surprise that math is the most commonly used word, since it is the subject of the responses.The majority of the most commonly used words are probably fairly neutral in sentiment; they are primarily words that are domain related.

So far my results are surprising, since this shows more positive coded statements than negative ones, which does not match the content of these responses.

Comparing with the AFINN lexicon, our values are larger, which makes sense because their scores range from -5 to 5 unlike the -1/1 scoring of the other lexicons. However, there still seem to be more positively coded responses than negative ones.

This seems to be even more positively coded than the other ones. From my knowledge of the data set, what I really need for more accurate results is a version that can account for negators of phrases, since they are present within the corpus of analysis. It would be a good idea to drill down further to see which words are driving these results.

I certainly remember reading phrases like “math is not something I enjoy” within the corpus. Additionally, “fast” may not be a positive word in this context, since students mentioned teachers going too fast for them to understand the material.

Solve and solving having positive values makes sense particularly thinking of the scale that occurs on the AFINN lexicon, with a value of just 1 since solving means a successful result in math. But the word “hard” having equal weight in the opposite direction seems imbalanced. It is hard to think of words more associated with negativity than “frustrating” or “struggle”, yet each is only a -2 on a scale that goes to -5 in intensity.

Once again, we see words that do not necessarily have a sentimental value in this context being scored with one. The clearest example is “teacher”. It is not meant to be positive every time a student mentions a teacher they had or their motivation or struggle in becoming a teacher in their response.

For furthering what was provided in the Silge & Robinson text, I found the sentimentr package which is designed to deal with certain issues within a corpus of text, such as negation. This program contains a sentiment function which assigns a value for each sentence

Using the benchmark provided from the r-bloggers write up of negatively coded sentences having a value of >.2, we can see that more sentences, as well as our median response, is finally coded as negative, even if only slightly, which is still a more accurate assessment of the corpus. I could not find a way to view the classification that this program uses to determine the rating of words, but by these results it seems like it is comparable, if not more accurate, than the ones used earlier.
