This is a pilot of an experimental manipulation of global CWV.
Participants were shown one of the following:
HIGH CWV CONDITION:
Think of a recent situation you’ve been in that brought out your
competitive side. It could be a project, organization, job, or event
where the situation caused you to feel highly competitive — where you
and others around you were doing whatever you could to get ahead and
beat others, rather than working together.
This situation may have caused you to set aside fairness and
generosity in favor of looking out for yourself and getting an edge on
others. You may have felt like winning was everything — if you played
nice and trusted others, you’d end up on the bottom. If no such
situation comes to mind, think of a situation that’s closest to what is
described here.
LOW CWV CONDITION:
Think of a recent situation you’ve been in that brought out your
cooperative side. It could be a project, organization, job, or event
where the situation caused you to feel highly cooperative — where you
were working together with people, trusting them and being trusted by
them, and acting with generosity and honesty.
In this situation, you may have been working together with others
toward a common goal; instead of being selfish, you all pulled together,
helped each other, and trusted one another. In this episode or context,
you and the people around you showed compassion and acted in harmony. If
no such situation comes to mind, think of a situation that’s closest to
what is described here.
Then, they completed three writing tasks:
1. In the space below, please write a few sentences describing this
situation.
2. In the situation that you thought about above, what did you do that
was [competitive/cooperative]? Please write a few sentences describing
your [competitive/cooperative] behavior.
3. The situation you described, as well your behavior in it, likely
resembles, in some way, a natural tendency in people’s relationships and
interactions. In a few sentences, please describe how the behavior you
told us about might be seen elsewhere in the social world. Where else
would these kinds of relationships and interactions emerge?
Then, they completed the following measures: CWV, relationship
expectancies of dominance, influence expectancies of dominance,
self-reported hypothetical dominance, and relationship concerns.
Let’s see who passed the attention check

---|---|---|
4 | low | I am in a Business Development role so a lot of my job is networking, attending conferences, and working at industry events. Recently I went to a conference in Palm Springs, CA with my co-worker. We had to work a booth for 4 days, networking with lawyers and making them aware of our firm. I had to partner up with my colleague and work together towards a common goal. We were both there as ambassadors of our firm and had to work together to optimize our time there. |
5 | low | Worked with a team to prepare for a store remodel. Duties included moving shelving and product. |
6 | low | Needed to determine level of data access to a certain group. One side wanted full access, the other wanted no access. Our team had to act as middlemen to determine the best compromise. In the end everyone made some level of concession. |
7 | high | I wanted to be the best trainer that my company has ever scene. I figured out how people learn in general and what makes people engage. I have been able to make a significant impact |
8 | low | During a class group project my team and I analyzed an acquisition deal. The complexity of the deal required us to rely on each other’s strengths - quantitative, presentation. We were open to sharing ideas and feedback with each other. |
9 | high | A time when I was competitive at a work situation was when we had to improvise lesson plans with another lesson plan last week. I found some great resources related to kids lessons on engineering and gathered materials to teach it. I was a leader in the lesson. |
10 | high | When I was applying to graduate school I got extremely competitive with my fellow psychology students. I wanted to get into my chosen programs and began looking for any and all opportunities to make my resume look better, recommending myself for things because I had a better relationship with professors, not because I was necessarily the most qualified for them. I was boastful when talking about how proud of myself I was and the schools I was applying to. I would talk behind people’s back, disparaging their applications and work. |
11 | high | I run a gaming club at my school. My students participate in online games against students in other schools. While it’s hard to cheat at video games, it’s very tempting sometimes to let my students who are the best at the game play multiple times so we have a better chance at winning. Unfortunately, we often lose our games because our team consists of 2 consistant players and 1 who isn’t as consistent at the game. |
12 | low | I work in a kitchen so every time I go to work I have to put aside my ego and be cooperative with my coworkers. It feels good to work as a team and have everything working smoothly as one unit |
13 | high | Recently when playing a game with some close friends I felt a certain degree of competetiveness as we typically play at a high level of skill. I always respect my friends enough to abide by the rules and play in a way that is fair and mutually enjoyable. |
14 | high | A situation like this is when it comes time for board exams for students. The goal is always to get 100% pass rate, and even though we are a part of the same school, we are “competing” with other campuses. It makes us feel better when we have students pass, and unfortunately, I did feel good when a student at another campus failed as it meant we were ahead. |
15 | high | My team and I had the opportunity to compete with several other teams at our company for a bonus of 500 dollars per person. We had to come up with a business model for a company and whoever the company chose received the bonus. |
16 | low | I recently went to a rally for palestinian rights and felt a great sense of cooperation and working together. We were raising our voices together but also discussing and exploring various ways to raise awareness, support the causes that matter to us, and take care of our local and global communities. It feels invigorating to set aside individualism for community needs, and to work towards protecting the rights of those who are marginalized. |
17 | high | I am naturally competitive by nature, so there are plenty examples I could think of. The most recent is that I have been taking Barre classes, and while they do not in any way frame it as a competition, I push myself to the breaking point trying to outdo the other people in the class. I sorely (pun intended) regret it much of the time, but I can’t fall behind. |
18 | low | There have been times in school wen we have been divided to groups, and we have to work together for a presentation or something like that and at times like that you cannot act alone you have to be cooperative and work hand in hand with other people. |
19 | high | On a project I was working on, my team had to come up with a variety of design samples to try to figure out what style our client liked. This entailed each of us coming up with four design ideas to then present to client to receive feedback. While there wasn’t really malice or pressure put on any one of us to “win”, there was an inherent sense of competition because we each wanted to be the one that cracked the case. I felt pressure and a little insecurity in my abilities but translated that into motivation to put out as good of work as I possibly could. |
20 | low | My company was recently acquired by a larger corporation. With the acquisition, came a lot of changes including department cuts. My manager told our small team, we needed to put together a presentation showing our daily tasks while also showing my the value of our department to avoid the cut. With only a week notice, my team & I worked well together and we put together an outstanding presentation which received praise from the executives, and we avoided the cut. |
21 | high | I was interviewing for a new role against people I worked with previously. It was very much a me vs. them scenario. I had to put my best foot forward while trying not to talk down about my competition to the interviewer. |
22 | high | I am generally not very competitive unless it has to do with fun competition. I think that sometimes compition is a good thing and sometimes it can cause more harm than good. |
23 | low | For a work project, I disagreed with the president’s interpretation of some results and justification document. I provided my input and he provided his. In the end because he owns the company, he had final say. Although, I believe he did incorporate and understand some of my concerns |
24 | low | My coworkers and I were all preparing to take a graded assessment for our company. We organized a study group and helped one another prepare by going over the guidelines and asking practice questions. We answered each others’ inquiries and motivated one another to do well. |
25 | high | We had a corporate team-building event playing Whirley-ball. A few of my colleagues and I took it way too seriously. |
26 | low | A situation where I banded together with those around me for the common good comes from my job. As an auditor, I rely on others to help me gather, analyze, and document information. I was having trouble getting some data I needed for a review, and I leaned on my supervisor and some guys from the automation team to help me facilitate a process to retrieve the needed data. |
27 | low | I was working together with my wife and my sister in law to take care of my mother in law’s health needs. We had to book appointments and make sure that she had the things that she needed for her house. |
28 | high | during a university business pitch competition, my team and i were up against others for a cash prize and internship slots. the atmosphere turned tense fast , no one shared ideas, and teams guarded everything. i focused solely on winning, even skipped helping a friend on another team. it wasn’t about learning anymore, just coming out on top. |
29 | high | Recently i felt very competative when playing games with my friends. even though it was suposed to be a fun party game, i wanted to win and started playing aggresive. i felt like winning was more important than just spending time with friends |
30 | low | A situation in work where we had to discuss a growth solution and how to accomplish that goal. All were on the same page at the end of the discussion. |
31 | low | I can’t really think of a situation like this. in my family life, we pull together all the time to accomplish things, but that is the nature of family life. There isn’t much planning involved; we just do what needs to be done. (I highly recommend including the prompt at the top of this page if you want more comprehensive responses from people.) |
32 | low | I was assigned a task to recruit teammates in a project. The vetting process was smooth since everyone cooperated effectively. |
34 | high | Last year our consulting firm worked with several non profit firms to apply to a big partnership with a well known foundation. The funding would make a huge difference so everyone was very determined to do their best. I felt pressure to keep my unique and best ideas to myself so I would make sure I would get credit. I didn’t want others to steal them and then get the praise. I suspect others were doing the same. This made it hard for the team to work together and focus on helping the non-profits. |
35 | low | I was volunteering at an event over the weekend. This included being part of a team and having to work together with people I have just met. |
37 | high | in a recent project at work, we were completing a major client. The pressure was on, and i knew i needed to stand out to secure the deal. i focused solely on showcasing my ideas, often pushing aside the contribution of others. while i did not actively undermine anyone, i found myself prioritizing winning over collaborations, thinking that only by standing out could i succeed |
38 | high | I went bowling with some friends of mine. We all talked about how bad we were all going to do, since it had been quite a long time since any of us had participated. When the game got going, however, I realized one friend in particular was much better than anticipated. With some limited practice under my belt and my muscle memory kicking it, we found ourselves in an unspoken match up. |
39 | high | My current job in healthcare requires for me to see certain number of productive units per hours worked. My coworkers have mentioned to my manager that the productive units per hours worked standard was too high and that it was not obtainable. I wanted to prove my coworker wrong so I have been meeting and exceeding the productive units per hours worked for the last 2 months. |
40 | low | With a recent project at my job, part of the scope was to identify a new hardware solution. When the first solution was proposed, the cost was too high so between myself, my direct manager and a few people included on the project, we spent roughly five months researching and reaching out to vendors/manufactures to find the best cost to performance ratio we could. We ended up finding something that was $100,000 cheaper than the first initial quote. |
41 | low | Completing a complicated project. There was engineering, inspection, general contractors, public water services, and multiple other utilities. Every group had a role to play and it had to be carefully choreographed to meet our deadlines and goals. |
42 | high | Recently the company has been looking to downsize meaning that on my team of 9 there will be 2-3 people who will be let go. This team has always been collaborative and supportive but the layoffs with the economy unrest meant we have become enemies in some ways. Everyone seems to be trying to find the “best”position to be in and trying to one up each other to be among those who are not laid off. |
43 | high | This situation was when I was preparing for a fight in Thailand and I was pushing my self to the limits to be in the best shape vs my opponent. My team was pushing me very hard and we were breaking old limitations. |
44 | low | We just moved to a new house last week. Four of us to be specific. I have two other siblings that live outside the house. We as a family don’t usually work well together as we are all strong personalities and want things to be done our own way. This was a situation that we needed to come together on as we were on a time crunch and we were the only ones who could get it done. We could not afford movers. There were a few times that people clashed but in the end we came together and got the whole house moved. I think it’s since renewed our relationships and brought us closer. It was nice to complete something as a family and we all in the end did our part. |
45 | low | I work for an educational institution where parents have to sign tuition contracts for their children. The enrollment deadline was a couple Fridays ago but some parents were having difficulty logging in to complete the process. I made myself available on the weekend to troubleshoot issues so we could meet our enrollment goals. |
46 | low | My family had to figure out how to spend our vacation together. I wanted a quiet vacation in the country but other family members wanted a big city adventure. I had to cooperate. |
47 | high | I have a counterpart at work and a couple times a year we both conduct similar test sets. It’s rather competitive for me. I attempt to perform my tests faster while also discovering more findings first, or discovering findings my colleague may have missed. |
48 | high | I havd had a situation where a coworker and i needed to update Ceo on policy changes. We collaborated but them coworker presented as his own ideas. |
49 | low | I was asked to work on a project in a group of 5 people. We were to finish this project in about a month. Understanding the magnitude of work involved, I quickly suggested we divided the work between ourselves in a manner that maximised efficiency. My group members were very accepting of my proposition and we were able to complete the work on time |
51 | high | I had a race coming up. It was a race organized by my community. I trained for a while to make sure I was prepared for this race. A few others in my community wanted to train together, but I declined because I did not want to give them a better chance of succeeding. I would ignore them when they reached out to meet and I trained alone. |
52 | high | One competitive experience I had was during a group presentation in class where multiple teams where vying for the highest score. My group and I worked hard to make our presentation engaging and well-researched, but there was a sense of pressure knowing we were being compared to others. The competition did push us to be more creative and thorough, and while we didn’t win, it was good learning experience in handling constructive criticism. |
53 | low | My team at work is highly collaborative and involves working closely and professionally with other people. Working together for the common goal is essential for my team. |
54 | low | community clean up event fostered teamwork, trust, and positive connections. |
55 | high | There are many times that I think about cheating repetitions when doing a workout. I always seem to have the struggle because I just want to be done, but I really do end up doing what is right in the end. |
56 | high | The event that comes to mind is when I was playing a competitive video game against four people. I really wanted to win, and so I gave it my all in the game and even was willing to duel the other players in-game to get a competitive advantage over them. |
57 | high | I am currently working as a Senior Manufacturing Engineer for about 8 years. I just went through a performance review two weeks ago. It was my direct manager who did the review and in that he mentioned that he will be retiring in Spring 2026. He mentioned that he had two people to choose from as a successor. It was between me and my colleague who I am a good friends with. We were facing a manufacturing issue with our new product. Me and my colleague was assigned a challenge to solve the issue within one week. Whoever solved it will get the manager role starting next year. I went into competitive mode and worked hard to solved the problem. It was a manufacturing issue and I went out of my way to talk to various industry experts about the issue. I was able to solve the problem after much work and submitted the proposal yesterday. The decision has yet to me made. |
58 | low | We were working on a small playhouse that we were going to build and raffle off at my work. All of my coworkers on the team volunteered to help and the money raised was going to a charity that we supported. We all worked hard to build the playhouse and had fun adding some playful elements too. We all imagined the children that got the playhouse would be extremely happy. |
59 | low | I had this happen on a work project last week. We both chose choices that benefitted us as a team, and helped us all out in the long run. It was cooperative and easy. |
60 | high | At the office we have to enter batch orders. We gets rewards for completing it. But there is not enough for everyone. I just get to work early in front of my coworkers, to get the batches so I could that that special cash reward. people tell me I should not do that, but I do not care, competing and winning is everything at the office. |
61 | low | A recent situation that brought out my cooperative side was working on a complex real estate development project that required coordination between multiple teams. Everyone had different priorities, but we had to align on multiple things. It was a collaborative effort where we relied on each other’s expertise, communicated openly, and problem-solved together. Trust and teamwork were essential, and the project moved forward smoothly because we all pulled in the same direction. |
63 | low | My team was having issues with our email software, and we all had to brainstorm ways to fix the issue. One colleague provided a suggestion, and we had to work through why this would and would not work. |
64 | low | Recently, I decided to volunteer at a food bank. I have never really volunteered in the past and was in a very gracious place. I went in to the experience a little nervous but open minded. The people I worked with were very kind and inclusive. I felt like I was making a difference and it was a very uplifting experience. I would definitely do something like that, as it helps me get out of my comfort zone as well. |
66 | high | This is going to sound selfish and kind of juvenile, but last month when I went out shopping for corned-beef brisket for my St. Patrick’s Day dinner. The meat associate at the store was putting the briskets out in the cooler and I wanted to make sure I got the biggest one I could so I actually kind of shoved a gentleman out of the way to reach across and grab a big-looking brisket. that was larger than the one he had. I saw him looking at it and I just was like “no. I am going to get that big roast and you aren’t” in my mind. Not sure why it was that important to me as I am not normally like that, but I felt like I needed to have the biggest roast. Not that it actually mattered to anyone in the grand scheme of things, but it made me feel like I had “won at selecting meat”, I guess. |
67 | low | Happiest ever I’m living my best as planning perfectly with my partner |
68 | high | Our team prepared some data for a report and while we were working on somewhat separate tasks I wanted to complete my part faster and better than others. The task was supposed to involve some interactions which would slow me down and I had to overcome or bypass those delays. |
69 | low | My elderly mom’s car broke down and she had no way of getting back and forth to work, errands, moving around, etc. My sisters and I had to coordinate across three continents and several cities in order to make sure she was taken care of. My oldest sister would schedule rides from her location, my second oldest sister, would call my mom to make sure she was in the proper vehicle, and I would have to talk her through how to read the vehicle information on her phone. We also had to schedule taking the car to the mechanic and getting it worked on, al while in different cities and on different schedules. In the end, we managed to get her car fixed while we coordinated her transportation. |
70 | high | I mostly only feel highly competitive with my spouse. He is very competitive with brings it out of me. We often compete in Apple Watch competitions where we compete about who can have more physical activity |
71 | high | I set a personal goal to work to elevate my sales over others during a special sale day. I wanted to stay focused on providing the best information I could and not getting distracted with taking breaks or downtime. |
72 | low | The situation that came to mind in terms of cooperation and the necessity of it in order to successfully get through the havoc is one I dealt with almost on a day-to-day basis when working as a manager at a popular, locally owned and run deli and ice cream shop. Our best days meant our busiest days, which usually were back to back in the spring, summer, and early fall months as tourists were visiting, and the college and grade schools in the city were out of class. Being a staff of almost all women, and taking on these extremely busy days with about 10 to 15 staff members, both trained and untrained employees most of the time, cooperation, and communication between the staff that day was vital to not only the businesses success of the day, but also the relationship, well-being and mental stamina of the loyal employees of the deli. |
73 | low | I worked with family members on a plan to help our mother. She is older and needs help. |
75 | high | It is a competitive environment. Every man for themselves. |
77 | high | I moved into a place with a girlfriend we both make beaded jewelry. I have been making jewelry for a longer time than her but after moving in with her I suddenly found myself feeling as though I needed to outdo her and complete much more intricate pieces and designs. As though I was in competition with her which is ridiculous because if anything I should be helping her since I have so much more experience. |
78 | low | For my mother’s funeral, me, my dad, and her siblings all worked together to give her a grand send off. We all had our duties. However, together we decorated the church for her service as she would have wanted. |
79 | high | I will be describing my responsive after imagining I’ve been in a competitive situation. |
80 | low | I frequently volunteer at an animal shelter and when I was there the other day, me and a few other workers/volunteers worked together to clean up and bring the dogs in for the night. |
81 | high | I suppose there was a case wherein another competitor bumped into me on purpose. I then tried to do the best I could after that experience when the person did not offer me an apology. I was ready to win! |
82 | high | I was competing for a promotion at work and realized I had no option than to stand out of my project group. I did opt for more responsibility which made my job harder in the interim |
83 | low | We had an issue at work where the team and I had to work together. We knew it would take all of us to figure it out and we worked until it was resolved. |
84 | low | Recently, at work, my team had a meeting to go over our client list and determine appropriate actions for each client. Everyone pitched into to provide take ownership of different tasks and meet the needs of the clients. |
85 | low | I am currently planning a trip with some friends. We’re working together to decide where to go, where exactly we’ll be staying, who is driving, etc. |
86 | low | I was working for my company’s annual anniversary sale weekend; we offered free popcorn and snow-cones. My manager trusted me to greet incoming customers with offers of these, and I trusted that I could ask for help or clarification on anything I was confused about - One such instance was offering of snow-cones; After giving a few out initially, I was told to offer them upon leaving, in order to make sure the store’s floor didn’t get wet/sticky with possible snow-cone spillage. Once my shift was over, my manager thanked me and told me that I did a great job; it felt very validating. |
87 | low | Today I was put in a situation like that. I could have been argumentative and placed blame but that only would have matters worse. Instead I was cooperative and took initiative and was a team player. Thanks to my actions the goal was met. |
88 | high | My colleagues and I were responsible for coming up with a solution to a work-related issue. While we all collectively brainstormed, at the end of the day, only one person could receive recognition for the best answer. As soon as “the best answer” was realized, it was a race to the leaders’ office to be the first one to share the solution. |
89 | low | In my work in the operating rooms of a hospital, my job is to help turn over rooms in between surgeries so that the next procedures can start on time. My team, which usually consists of 4 other individuals, and I work together to service 15 operating rooms and make sure they are thoroughly cleaned and have all the equipment necessary for each procedure. During our busy times, we must split up the workload and tackle individual tasks before reconvening as a team once all the work is completed. This requires cooperation and trust that your other workers will do their work while you do yours. |
90 | high | One time when I was feeling especially competitive was when I was in graduate school and had to put on a presentation. There were other people in the same field and I wanted to stand out from them. I worked harder than them, and I put forth extra effort beyond what I knew we were expected to do because I wanted to do better. |
91 | high | When I was about to graduate from college I became obsessed with having the top grade in my department. I became very hesitant to help others solve their problems on their projects and focused only on my grades and projects. |
92 | low | I worked with a team to submit a grant proposal. We all had to contribute different parts of the proposal- me, the logic model, and clinical and program staff had to contribute other sections toward the final product. |

94 | low | At my job we had to step up train and help the group that was taking our job to teach them everything we know . |
95 | high | My workplace had an event where they were trying to promote being more healthy. So they encourage the employees to work out and they would win prizes. People had to submit what they did for the week every week for a couple of months. |
96 | high | I am at a job where I am totally undervalued and unappreciated. When we work together I like to show that I am doing my part. While it feels petty, I often cc others, especially the top teir people in the firm, just to let them know that I am constantly working on the issue. It is probably a waste of time for them to read the mundane tasks I am involved in but at least they know that I am hard at work. Though, I am not sure they care. |
97 | high | I cannot recall a personal situation of competiveness, but as a parent of an athlete competing for a starting position, I push them to put themselves first and do the best they can. |
98 | low | Having open minded responses due to this survey is highly recommended and appreciated for accurate submissions to situations. |
99 | low | I trained another co-worker on my procedure. It has been too much work for me lately, and I could use the help. I was very patient with my co-worker and wanted them to succeed. It was also a promotion for them as well. |
100 | low | I recently had to work cross-departmentally to design and roll out a new feature for our website. It involved 3 separate department heads and myself to work together for everything from design, implementation, to internal training all employees on it. |
101 | low | I was doing team building exercises in the woods with my highschool class. some of the exercises had us suspended in a tree, others had us working together to figure out a puzzle. in all of these exercises there was an element of putting our trust in one another. we had to rely on the other to keep ourselves safe, and also put our minds together to achieve a common goal. |
102 | low | We had a large work project that’s deadline was moved up a week. Instead of complaining we all took a different part to accomplish quicker and get the job done. |
103 | high | I do not like being put into situations like this and I prefer not to be in them. |
104 | high | I was recently competitive during a gaming tournament that was hosted among friends. It was friendly though I felt more competitive than usual for some reason. |
105 | low | Unlike most modern day situations involving multiple people, this situation brought out a more compassionate side which brought people together. It should be more common in our world |
106 | low | I have to be part of a cooperative situation all the time at my workplace. If my coworkers and I do not do that, the house we’re working on will fall apart. |
108 | low | i was part of a team organizing a community cleanup day. we were all passionate about making the neighbourhood cleaner abd greener. my team members and I brainstormed ideas, divided tasks and worked together to gather supplies, recruit volunteers, and spread the word. we faced challenges like finding enough volunteers, securing donations and dealing with unexpected weather. but we overcame those obstacles by working together, supporting each other, and staying focused on our shared goal. on the day of the cleanup, we saw the community come together, working side by side to make a difference and this mad me feel so fufilled and part of a loving community |
109 | high | at work, we were divided into teams to make research on a topic and present to the hearing of everyone. we collaborated, shared resources and expertise, it was a really exciting and interesting experience for me. |
110 | high | The most recent situation I can think of is a chess tournament I took part in. I’m a middling amateur chess player, and many of the people participating were quite a bit younger than me. At the same time, many of these younger people cleaned my clock in the games. It was a humbling experience. Also, good for them! |
111 | high | I am competitive during games with others. Last week, I played a card game with family. I became invested in winning. However, I never cut corners. If I was to lose, I lost fairly. |
112 | high | We recently had a sales contest which we never do. It got hilariously cut throat as four paid days off was the prize. Everyone was in it to win it lol Civility and fair play went out the window lol |
113 | high | In a recent team project, we were competing for a bonus based on our performance. I discovered a co worker’s great idea but chose to keep it to myself, thinking it would help me stand out. I worked late to ensure my success, but i felt guilty for not supporting my team. |
115 | low | A friend helped me move. That’s it. Not sure how to expand on that. |
116 | low | I have recently been promoted to a position to help work on a new project that had AI assistance. Me and a few others had to work together to help implement this AI and learn how it works, and we did a great job! |
117 | high | The last situation in which I was highly competitive was when my friend and I had a lifting competition of sorts. While we’re similar in height we’re a bit different in weight and fitness goals, so to keep things fair the metric we used was whoever did more training volume in total would win. We made it a competition of sorts to keep each other a accountable and as a fun way for us to see which one was more “fit”. Throughout the competition I was able to keep my friend on his toes and he trained slightly more than he normally would. I try to train at least 5 days a week if not 6 while my friend typically does 4-5 days a week, while playing basketball and or going on a run once or twice a week. |
118 | high | We recently went through our year end performance review process and I have one coworker who I am in direct competition with. My supervisor hired my coworker and prefers her to me so I get frustrated with the outcome of the review. I went to my boss’s supervisor to get some feedback about my performance. I had recently had a few visible work successes and appreciated the feedback from someone who didn’t have as much bias. |
119 | high | There was a project my classmates and i did for class, we had the option to do it alone or as a group but it would take longer as a group because there would be more responses. I decided to do mine alone and ended up finishing on time |
120 | low | My situation occurs between my ex and myself. We share custody of a 9 year old girl. Legally it was my day to have the child but her mother complained that she couldn’t bring her to me because her car wasn’t working. After talking at length I decided to pick up my daughter even though I had picked her up and dropped her off at her mothers numerous times. If I had to drive a half hour to see my daughter so be it. I would be nice if her mother would at the very least meet me half way. |
121 | high | I was working at a job that was very competitive, and those who fell behind were given less work. The less work that we did, the less important we looked to the higher ups. I did my work, two full shelves of backlog that I was given, and I also worked on and finished four other legal processing assistants back logged work. I looked important and felt important. The higher ups definitely noticed me in a really big way. It was great for raises. The workers that I did their backlog were not happy with me because they were jealous that I was so fast. They tried to catch up with me, but couldn’t. I was just a really fast thinker and worker and very determined to win. And I did. |
122 | high | My job involves driving to make deliveries to commercial customers. We have a speed tracking device, but it can be turned off, and I tried to make deliveries faster by speeding when it felt safe to do so. |
123 | low | I was working on SSRS reports for my previous employer. I was working with other developers to automate work that had been done manually. |
124 | low | We had a job that felt almost impossible to complete. We had 8 hours to finish the project which we estimated we would need 10 hours to complete. I volunteered to take on more roles to help complete the project on time. Some of these roles I took on I had little to no experience with the subject. I was learning on the fly and performed pretty well considering the lack of experience in some areas. This made me feel like a team player and I was also learning new things under a time constraint. |
125 | low | Just recently at my job we experienced a power outage where our backup generator did not kick on for about 1 hour. Due to this situation that 1 hour set us back to a point where we were afraid certain things would not be able to get done that needed to be done. During the outage time my co workers and I got together and focused on what could be done during the outage. After we all discussed we started knocking out those things that could be done until the power was restored. Once the power was restored we broke up into small teams (their were 12 of us) and we were all able to get the major projects done and were even able to get the projects that were not a concern done as well. |
126 | low | I’m pretty quick at finishing my work resetting shelves at a supermarket. When I finish I offer help to those who are not yet done with their section. Today it paid off for me as I was having trouble moving a shelf and one of my co-workers was willing to help me move it. |
127 | high | I was at work and my coworker did something better than expected |
129 | low | When the door to our laundry room wouldn’t open I spoke to my other coworkers to inform them of the situation. They had to use the master key to use it and to figure out how to charge the battery door we spoke to my boss and he told us how to do it. |
130 | high | Our family recently acquired a bunch of Nerf guns, so we each grabbed a gun and a bunch of darts and went to war. There were no teams. It was every man for himself. My brother, of course, came out victorious. However, I did manage to take a few of the kids out before he got me. |
131 | high | I felt very competitive when playing chess against my partner. I felt bad because I used tricks, like looking at certain parts of the board to distract him from the area that I didn’t want him to see. I also try to pick up on his tells, which feels unfair because he doesn’t know I’m doing that. |

133 | low | I USE A COMBINATION OF OPEN, HONEST COMMUNICATION ACTIVE LISTENING, AND LEVERAGING VARIOUS CHANNELS TO ENSURE EVERYONE IS INFORMED AND ENGAGED. |
134 | high | I have a weekly Mario kart tournament with my family. It gets cutthroat. There have been fights and hurt feelings when someone loses at the very end. They never last long because it’s just a game, but it is probably the most intense and competitive things I’ve done in many years. |
135 | low | Currently working on a project to enhance our reporting package and how it is delivered. Working with multiple levels within the organization |
136 | high | In my job only one person gets to do the important data collection while others help with recording the data and handing stuff to the lead. There was one inexperienced person doing the data collection this time and to support her I was giving her information but it felt like she didn’t want to trust me so it made me feel unimportant and competitive, like I was lower status than her. |
137 | high | My team had setup monthly goals that we were supposed to meet by the end of the month. Me being an over achiever was exceeding in my goal numbers and taking some of the work from my colleagues who were performing so great. I wanted to make sure we beat the other teams that were up against even if I had to take on additional work to get it done. By the end of the month I had exceeded all expectations and that didn’t sit to well with someone of my teammates who thought I was overshadowing everyone. |
138 | low | I helped a coworker with a project as he needed some of my advice. I let him know my thought process and pointed him in the right direction. He was very appreciative of my help and I was glad to help. |
139 | low | A situation that feels similar to this for me was when I was working in banking. First time handling money, My coworkers made me feel comfortable showing me tips and tricks on how to handle money and I felt comfortable asking them questions. Creating that comfortable environment in a corporation. |
140 | high | I usually try to race my coworkers in completing projects. Just recently i cut some corners to make things go faster so i could “win”. |
141 | high | A few members of our company have been fighting to become the responsible party of an important project. The project is very important for the organization and will bring a lot of profit. Successfully finishing the project will lead to promotion and other benefits so everything is chasing for the project aggressively. |
143 | low | My co-workers and I had to recruit a certain number of children by a certain date. |
144 | low | We had a strict deadline for a project that had fallen behind so multiple departments came together to meet the deadline. Departments that worked together to facilitate this was QA which I am a member of, operations manager and his workers, the project manager, purchasing team, receiving team and shipping team. We worked together better than ever by keeping everyone in the loop, a QA team member created a live working EBOM to update with notes and mark off items as they became completed or needed to go to the next department to do their part. This worked very effectively. I was proud of our company when we completed that job before the deadline and the customer was thrilled. |
145 | low | My team and I were assigned with finding missed errors in team reports, by working together we found all errors and were able to help new teams learn how to spot check. We all felt proud and grateful to be able to rely on each other during this project. |
146 | low | I was at work and asked my coworkers to cover my tables because there was something wrong with our system. While I sorted it out, they took the load and were very efficient. I was able to fix the system and get people’s checks in time. |
147 | high | Fierce coding contest; collaboration diminished as personal ambition prevailed. |
148 | high | At work there was a project whose’s various components were assigned to various team members. The project was a time crunch and team members wanted to show how efficient they were and it became a race. |
149 | high | One situation I can think of was when I was in college we were all a lot more competitive than we need to be. |
150 | low | I once had a team of 4 people that were assigned a certain task the goal was to get the work done as fast as possible if not we were looking at a 15 hour shift. that day was actually very important for me because my wife needed me since she was very pregnant and in pain, my coworkers knew that that decided to give their 1000 percent effort into this task. we all usually fool around but they knew i really needed this from them and they stepped up for me. I was very appreciative towords their actions |
151 | high | I’ve gotten the most competitive recently over pickleball. I play with a friend and we oftentimes wipe our competitions no problem. However, a few weeks ago we went to a new court, and played against new people who gave us challenges. We both told each other we needed to do better to win and the game became extremely competitive where every point felt like it meant a lot. |
152 | low | A part of our NSSLA, National Student Speech and Language Association, we are required to meet monthly as a body of students and run/organize ideas for our organization. It includes campus events, volunteer work, and awareness events pertaining to our field of work. |
153 | low | Recently, I collaborated with a team of software engineers to develop a new feature for our website We worked together to brainstorm ideas, divide tasks based on our strengths, and troubleshoot issues as they came up. It was a generally smooth process where we were able to meet our deadlines and goals. |
154 | low | The situation took place at my place of work. A team member was having a hard time with a certain project and was unable to meet the deadline, but as they asked me and some other team members for help, we were able to manage under pressure and get them to finish their workload. |
155 | low | I am generally very cooperative by nature. A couple of weekends ago my boyfriend and I wanted to plant some azaleas. He got a few clippings from his neighbor and then he and his son dug the holes and we worked together to figure out the best way to place and plant them. |
156 | high | In our office, we recently changed the program that we use to keep financial records. It was much different than the one we previously used. There were many new things to learn. Those of us n the office decided to see who would be the first one to master this new system. It didn’t work out well. We made a few mistakes. Our supervisor was not happy. |
157 | high | About a week ago, I was applying for this job where it has you train AI to give chat bots the right information to respond with. This company is new and many people began applying there recently. I knew that they had to be filled up at this point, accepting very little. So when they had me do the assessment test, I had to lock in and try my very best to pass. The questions however, were kind of easy so I know I definitely passed. |
158 | high | It was at work and we were having a competition between teachers of who could get the most items donated for a food bank. If our classroom won, we would get a pizza party. It definitely did not make me want to cheat (what kind of an example would I be setting for the students if I did that?), but it did make me highly encourage them to participate. We would discuss who we were helping by donating food items. We would write it in the agendas that went home and talk about it before the end of the day in hopes that they would remember to tell their parents as soon as they saw them after school. |
159 | low | When I was pledging for my sorority, the group of women in my group and I worked together to get through a series of challenges and make it through to the final step and crossing over. We knew that relying on each other was the only way because if 1 failed we all did. We worked together memorize things to recite, we learned dances and poems. We had to be physically fit and help each other complete challenges that literally required us to carry the weakest link. Trust was major. We learned from eachother and shared vulnerabilities that ultimately led us to our coming goal. |
160 | low | While working at the penitentiary, all educational staff had to work together to ensure that all paperwork for students were completed correctly prior to their early release. Each person had a task to complete prior to the next person being able to complete their task. Everyone worked together to ensure that everything was complete. |

162 | high | In school, when we would do photography assignments, we would be instructed to take really good photographs in 30 minutes. Whoever had the best photo would get a 100 automatically. In our campus we only had about 2 really good locations for photos and we were grouped in teams of 3 with 10 groups in total. A lot of the times, my team would get to the good locations for photos first before anyone else and we would stay in that certain location until the time was up. This caused an inconvenience to the other groups because they wouldn’t get a turn to take photos at this location. |
163 | low | At a nearby food drive, volunteers came together to collect and distribute food, fostering collaboration and trust as they worked toward the shared objective of assisting families in need. |
164 | high | I think the closest thing that comes to mind for that sort of thing was when I was working at a doggy daycare and we had “too many” people some days and someone would have to go home. This was frustrating because most of my peers wouldn’t want to leave because the work was easy, which is why they were sending someone home. At the time, I was living by myself in a studio apartment, where as all of my other coworkers were still living rent-free with their parents. So when no one was willing to go home, I got really upset and sort of snapped at everyone who wasn’t leaving because they WANTED the money, but I NEEDED the money to make rent. I said something along the lines of, “Yeah but all y’all don’t need to pay rent, so I need the hours and I have to stay.” and then the one of the other girls there was like, “Well I don’t have a ride home so I can’t leave.” She used that excuse all the time, and it was really starting to aggravate me. And my other coworker said something along the lines of, “Well I can’t go either. I need the money because I’m saving up to move out to get away from my mom.” To which I think I fired something back along the lines of, “Yeah but your rents not DUE.” |
165 | high | My husband and I recently played a game we call “kayak”. We both kayak and we started playing this game when we first started dating. Think of it like punch buggy. When we’re out and about and we see a kayak, the first person to say “kayak” gets the point. We’ve been doing this for 17+ years now and as you can imagine, we’ve developed quite a list of rules for this game to keep it fair and entertaining. For example, if someone tells kayak and when we get closer see that it was not a kayak, perhaps a canoe or paddleboard, the person who incorrectly called it loses a point. You only get 1 point for each vehicle carrying kayaks, no matter how many are on it. You can’t call the same kayak twice even if you see it an hour later, etc. It makes road trips fun and it is just something that makes us smile. Well, over the winter we don’t see many kayaks, but we had our first really warm day last week and had a bit of a long drive and the kayak game has started again for the year! |
166 | low | When my peers and I take a difficult class together, we become cooperative in order to get through the content. For example, we compare answers and share additional resources and materials with one another. |
167 | high | The only situation I can think of is one at work where we were all trying to make the most sales. My coworkers and I were all competing for clients so it was really cut throat at work. People would try to steal clients before another coworker could make a sale. I felt like if I wasn’t ruthless and pushy that I would lose the competition. I ended up finishing in a top spot and got a gift card for my performance. |
168 | high | A situation that brought out my competitive side was working in December where we had to work to complete as many assignments as possible before the year end. During this time I only focused on my own work assignments. When people reached out for other work related issues, I gave them a short answer and didn’t help like I did before. In the end I was in the top 10 however I only got a small gift card for it. Top 5 received cash incentive. |
169 | high | In my work environment, we had. situation where several sites had to work on collection calls. 5 sites - had over 3000 collection calls to make. We were to only all on our specific site location. One site had 50, one site had 75, one site had 150, one site had 150, and the last site had 600. The site that had 600 calls, was the site I worked at. The new manager (newly hired a week into the job), said “the person with the most calls will receive a Starbucks drink”. |

We all made sure the area was tidy and clean and we ended the day socializing the cats. |
174 | low | I recently started a new job at this company where their goal is to help build and develop sports facilities for a specific sport. This job is entirely collaborative as we basically work as general contractors for projects. I get to work with our internal team as well as collaborate with all partners in our company. This leads to a lot of cooperation at all times. I like to see how it goes during every step of the process and cooperation is a requirement. |
175 | low | I had to be cooperative with different teams to formulate a goal in order to reduce the number of credits we had to do. It was good to work with people from different teams to reach a goal that we can all agree on. It was easy to do based on having prior agreements via emails and standard works. |
176 | high | At my previous job, I was in the role of checking patients in at a clinic. I also I had to collect money towards balances. The other receptionist and had our own competition going on who could take the most money. I had the advantage of sitting at the bigger window. In the end, I collected the most and did not feel an ounce of remorse for having an advantage. |

There was no distance between us and we all cooperated on the work in order to meet the deadline. It was about the outcome not ego. |

It caused increased competition amongst my co-workers, and an increased emphasis on aggressive customer focused sales tactics. |
189 | low | This is is a situation that happened at work. We had a new project kicking off and I was assigned to be the project lead. However, there are many moving parts to this project, including a lot of goals that are outside of my technical skill set. 4 | low | I think there are many cases where two coworkers have to work together to represent their firm. For example, we don’t have much in common outside of work, but we were in the same place, halfway across the country, representing our firm and working towards a common goal so had no choice but to work together and optimize our time. 11 | high | Competativeness is very common in games and sports. Soccer, basketball, and even dance competitions face similar desires to put their best members further so that they can do the best that they can in the competition. |
12 | low | Cooperation in kitchens can be seen around the world |
13 | high | I believe it would be seen as normal in the social world as I believe it be normal to be competetive. The types of relationships and interaction would emerge more commonly during sporting events and high stakes naturaly competative work environments. |
14 | high | This can be seen in any store-level type of interaction. Competing stores always want to beat out those that sell the same products, so they keep track of the sales, costs, and prices that the other stores set to see if they can outsell them. |
15 | high | They might emerge in sports such as the olympics or they might occur when businesses compete to get contracts. |
16 | low | These kinds of interactions occur all the time, and have occurred throughout history. Coming together to advocate for the rights of self and others is a longstanding practice that people have engaged in. We see these interactions all over the world in grass roots efforts, as well as in smaller microcosms when we advocate directly within our communities |
17 | high | Some people love competition the way that I do, so they might feel excited to see someone else throwing down a challenge, regardless of the environment. Some people really find a competitive attitude distasteful, particularly in certain situations. Others might find it intimidating or daunting to be around competitive people. |
18 | low | Yeah, in families, int he society, in organizations and even in politics I think the role of team work cannot be over-emphasized. |
19 | high | These same type of behaviors could show up in social situations like gift giving. In a scenario like a birthday, the person is opening each present in front of all their guests so everyone can see what each person bought and how it was received. This creates a sense of competition in that everyone wants the birthday person to like their gift the most, even though there isn’t an explicit competition taking place. |
20 | low | It is important to listen to everyone’s inputs and opinions in most real world situations. It comes with being fair and respectful. |
21 | high | These interactions occur naturally in education settings, job settings, interpersonal relationships/romantic pursuits. |
22 | high | I think all sports can have the same type of competition factor. I think having someone to compair yourself to is a good thing. |
23 | low | in all sorts of situations. including political debates, discussions with spouse, sales negotiations, conversations with friends |
24 | low | These kinds of relationships and interactions would primarily occur in the workplace or in a school setting. The event involved studying for an assessment, so social situations that involve this would include a class or workplace dynamic. The situation would involve a study group or team. |
25 | high | It’s more like beer-league sports activities, where only a few people are being overtly competitive and the rest are just having fun. |
26 | low | I think it’s comparable to really any situation where a person is asking for or receiving help. An examples could be if I needed help retrieving and item from a high up shelf, I ask for help from an employee, and they grab a ladder I didn’t have access to in order to reach it. In that scenario, I offer immense gratitude for the time the employee spent, and I would hope that others would as well. |
27 | low | This type of behavior might be seen at senior care facilities. It could also be seen in hospitals. |
28 | high | in corporate settings, especially during promotions or client bids where only one person or team can win. |
29 | high | being competative is very natural, it comes out anywhere there is a clash of interests. being competative in games and such is seen just fine, other places being competitive might be seen as aggresive. |
30 | low | It would have to most likely be in a scenario where there was some like-mindedness revolved around the project at hand. |
31 | low | People need to be cooperative in a variety of ways just to keep society moving along. Waiting in line is an example of this. |
32 | low | At home, during family meetings or events. In public places |
34 | high | People might wait to reveal their best ideas or stories or outfits until they are in a big enough group of people they look up to or are trying to win over. They won’t use it on people that won’t give them social gain. |
35 | low | I feel that these kinds of relationships are developed in situations were people need to work together to accomplish a common goal. Just having the same goal amongst people will allow them to have a stronger connection while collaborating. |
37 | high | this competitive behavior can be seen in workplace, where the employees vie for promotions, in schools where students compete for top grades, or in sport where athletes aim to outperform others for victory. it often arises when rewards or recognition are at stake |
38 | high | Atheletic gatherings, whether organized or casual, will most often bring out this nature of people. |
39 | high | I have seen similar behaviors in relationships, romantic or platonic. One party needs to see the bigger picture in mind and put in extra effort to be more efficient and proactive in order for the relationship to continue to thrive. |
40 | low | In a family or relationship when dealing with finances. My wife and I work together like this when we create a budget so we can save money or pay things off. |
41 | low | You see this in most workplaces, social events like parties, and interpersonal relationships - anywhere where there’s an ultimate goal and more than one stakeholder. |
42 | high | I think everyone can be “every man for themselves” when they feel backed into a corner. The goal is to survive and try to make sure you are the person on top at the end. |
43 | high | They could emerge all around the world at any fight gym. People train for fights and push the limits everyday. There are different sports you can fight in all over the world. |
44 | low | I think it would be closest to a workplace. I know when I worked in the meat department there would be hectic days where everybody needed to come together to do their part so that we could successfully complete the day. |
45 | low | I think these kinds of relationships and interactions would show up just about anywhere. A lot of people don’t mind going slightly out of their way to help someone in a new situation that they’re unsure of. |
46 | low | People have to cooperate n all facets of life. Being a social person requires cooperation. |
47 | high | These situations could emerge in any work place or social situations. People like to stand out as a step above others. People like to be acknowledged for hard work and dedication. |
48 | high | This would likely be seen as somewhat combative and petty. I thonk in social world it might be seen in friends groups where people are trying to get ahead |
49 | low | Behaviour like this may be seen generally in any work setting |
51 | high | They would be seen in anything that requires you to compete. If you were up for a promotion and you were up against someone else, this could emerge. |
52 | high | This kind of competitive behavior can be seen in professional settings, like job interviews or workplace projects. It also appears in social settings like leadership roles in clubs or organizations. Even in everyday situations, like conversations or debates, people may display competitive tendencies |
53 | low | I can see these relationships emerging in any workplace or even in a stereotypical family. Everyone contributing to the common goal. It also could be seen in societies with universal healthcare and social programs. |
54 | low | similar cooperative behaviors emerge in team sports, classrooms, and community projects. |
55 | high | This behaviour could also come across in the workplace or at school. Where you can lie and/or cheat. This would not be acceptable I don’t think anywhere in the world. |
56 | high | I think this would be seen in real-world events such as sports, or in board games. It also might be used in competitive job markets where applicants tried to get the job over others. |
57 | high | I think these relationships are mostly seen in corporate and business world. In corporate environment, there is a fierce competition to climb the ladder and get that promotion. Similarly in business world every business is trying to get better and stay ahead of competition to gain the market share. |
58 | low | I think that these relationships and interactions would emerge if you are in a group that has a mutual project that they want to finish. It could also work if you had a common goal that you all wanted to get done. |
59 | low | I think this kind of behavior emerges in good communicative relationships. If everyone comminucates and is on the same page, and is genuine, it builds a good relationship. |
60 | high | Some people might think i am selfish, but i do not care. I I like the money and being competitive. Winning for me is important everywhere, at school, communities, championships. |
61 | low | The cooperation I described is common in teamwork-driven environments like community projects, workplace collaborations, and volunteer efforts. |
63 | low | These kinds of interactions come up in interpersonal relationships all over |
64 | low | It reminds me of just work relationships in general. Everyone has their job, their tasks, their responsibilities. Some people have more of a leadship role, and help manage other people. When people work together is when the job is able to get done in a productive way. Plus, you make friends along the way! |
66 | high | I think a lot of people are in the mindset of “I need to get that thing before someone else does and then I go without”. You know a “get it or lose it mindset”. I think you see it a lot in the world of finance and politics as people think that if they grab all of the money then they make sure others cannot have it and if people are coming here they are using resources that “natives” could be using, so they feel a need to keep them from having what they see is theirs and elect leaders that will ensure these people do not get what they do not deserve. |
67 | low | But explaining that you led that large team to deliver a multi-month project through major challenges is impressive. And be sure to highlight what the challenges |
68 | high | Maybe in friendships? While I do need help from my friends and am happy to provide help when the need it, I do prioritize wellbeing of me and my family over my friends’ sometimes. |
69 | low | These relationships and interactions would likely emerge between most close families, I think. I don’t really think they are that uncommon. |
70 | high | I think these behaviors are natural in any kind of competition or when we feel threatened by someone else |
71 | high | I think in other situations it could be seen as stepping on other people’s toes or not matching the energy of the other staff. Instead of a more relaxed interaction like I would have with them outside of work, this was brief interactions and staying focused on customers it felt less friendly or cordial. |
72 | low | The cooperation, actions or behaviors I described in the previous section could vary well be seen in other areas of the social world, such as classrooms where the teacher starts the class off with a rundown of the day’s lesson and/or the topics to be discussed. I could also envision the scenario I described being relevant in couples therapy, where the therapist may start off a session by giving each individual in the relationship a chance too say what they are feeling or have been thinking. |
73 | low | Their are many families in the situation with older parents in need of assistance. |
75 | high | People tend to take care of themselves first and worry about others second. Sink or swim. |
77 | high | Possibly in situations where a friend refers another friend to work at her job and that friend gets hired. Then suddenly the friend who has been working at the job feels like she is competing with the lower-level employee that is her friend. |
78 | low | It takes a village. This would be the case in raising children. As an aunt, for instance, if there is something my nephew needs be it tangible or intangible, I am there to provide and support even if the parents are able. In intimate relationships and even business relationships, people provide support to each other and work together to reach a common goal. |
79 | high | I might see this competitiveness in a work place or school setting. Especially if someone is trying to get a promotion or if there is an athletic event at a school. |
80 | low | I think this type of collaboration in order to achieve a goal is very common and can be seen in a multitude of social situations such as individuals working together to complete a construction project or a group of volunteers taking on different responsibilities in order to organize a neighborhood cleanup. |
81 | high | Definitely out in the business and competitive job world for sure. People are less likely to work together when a bonus is on the line. I will always thank people for helping me, but others sometime claim things as their own. I will also always apologize if I accidentally ran into someone! |
82 | high | I think almost every environment has an I stance where people who are competitive and try harder than the other person gets a leg up in society. Unfortunately the only way to move up is harder work than the next one |
83 | low | It would align to parenting. You have to work with your partner to solve problems. |
84 | low | This might be similar to a situation at home where multiple members of a household need to pitch in together to take care of responsibilities and chores. Everyone needs to take some ownership over some task. There needs to be appreciate expressed for each person’s contributions, as well as feedback when someone is not helping. |
85 | low | Planning a work trip or family trip is very similar. Any situation where you have to travel in a group. |
86 | low | I think these would emerge in almost any employment situation, as employment is essentially a mutually cooperative contract; You’re hired to do the work, and benefit with wages, while the business owner benefits with increased help and support, and most likely, increased profits due to the additional help. |
87 | low | This can happen in many aspects of your day to day life as long as you are in contact with other people |
88 | high | I could see these relationships and interactions emerging in families and friends. There is sometimes a healthy dose of competition in relationships of those who are close, and the people in those relationships would unlikely take issue to becoming a little physical (not in an angry or mean way) to scramble through a doorway first. |
89 | low | This level of cooperation and division of labor is visible both in the micro and macro level throughout all of society. In personal and familial relationships, this interaction is essential for the family working together as a unit and working through their problems. In the macro scale, this cooperation is visible in government systems in which checks and balances are used to ensure smooth operation of government. |
90 | high | I don’t think people would think all that negatively about it. Maybe that I’m a little bit of a try hard, which is sort of true. But I think in the actual profession, the audience would respond well to it, and that’s what matters most to me. |
91 | high | This behavior should be seen as selfish. This would lead to people distancing themselves from me and eventually to stop and association with me. These situations could also occur in the workplace. |
92 | low | I think in any work environment, we want to be seen as dependable, so we want to be able to get things to the appropriate person on time. |
93 | high | I think this can be seen anywhere and in any situation. Parks, work, home, parties, etc. |
94 | low | I feel alot of people would not do what I did because of the people taking our job. |
95 | high | It works like that in school where people compete for the best grades or in the workplace to get a raise. |
96 | high | It seems like running for the finish line and not paying attention to those you fly by. Do they need your help? Should you slow down for them? All I care about is winning the race and showing that I am doing my job. Who cares about those I leave behind!!! This is survival of the fittest as seen in nature. |
97 | high | I think these kinds of behaviors emerge everywhere in the world, in many different situations, as people are naturally competitive and want to strive to be the best in whatever it is they do. |
98 | low | I think having open mind to any social interaction is much needed in the world because one small initial encounter can effect someone tragically, such as someone having a bad day and just seeking some sort of communication can save someone’s life. |
99 | low | When someone hold the door open for another person and being kind and understanding. Smiling at someone that looks like they could use some cheering up. |
100 | low | I think this is basic behavior for interpersonal relationships as well. Our strategy of agreeing to uniform messaging and instruction to our different teams sort of resembles the way parents often agree to strategies for raising a child together. |
101 | low | in everyday life. when you need help from a neighbor or need to rely on your community for safety and support. |
102 | low | We are crisis occurs people join together and jump to action. No one wastes time wondering who will do what they just do it and help each other. |
103 | high | Competitive behavior is seen in sports and anything that allows a person to be ranked. Even amongst siblings competing for parents attention. I also see it in people compete in social situations. |
104 | high | This feeling can happen in multiple places, particularly in workspace situations. |
105 | low | I feel this type of behavior mostly surfaces only in times of extreme pressure such as a natural disaster of unexpected life change |
106 | low | This can be applied to jobs that require a minimum of two people to complete. |
108 | low | this behaviour may be seen in churches, communities, fellowships, groups |
109 | high | this behaviours may be seen in schools ans some other educational institutes or gatherings and workplaces |
110 | high | I would imagine this kind of situation is seen throughout the world of competitive sports, but also in politics, where, unfortunately, being seen as successful seems to have supplanted being seen as truthful. |
111 | high | I think this emerges in all areas. This is seen in the business world, during events and when looking for a partner. |
112 | high | sometimes you do whatever it takes to accomplish a goal in personal life or business |
113 | high | The competitive behaviour can be observed in schools where students compete for grades. Also in sports and workplaces. |
115 | low | People doing things together need to pay attention to what each other are doing. It needs to be a coordinated effort. This sort of situation arises in nearly any form of work, at some point. |
116 | low | I think this type of behavior can be used in almost any way in society. Helping people with small things like taking in groceries, or helping family members around the house or with things they’re struggling with. |
117 | high | The behavior I described in the competition with my friend would be seen as highly competitive since I went above and beyond to ensure that I would not lose. It could also be perceived as slightly unhealthy in a way since it could be argued that during the competition, my drive to win caused me to overtrain. |
118 | high | I’m not sure how it would elsewhere be relevant outside of my specific experience. Maybe with siblings going to a different parent to get additional feedback. Although that seems more petty. |
119 | high | I think it might be used for survival. Having a group might be beneficial but you also have to do things as a group when things could be easier solo depending on the situation. Like example buying food for your friends when you can just buy food for yourself. You have to think about everyone rather than yourself |
120 | low | I think cooperation is found in everyday life. Anytime there’s a relationship or a co-parenting situation there is negotiation and cooperation. And sometimes exploitation but I digress. |
121 | high | Other places behavior like this exists can be found in social groups, as well as in public places like stores during black Friday events. People want what they want, and they often will not let others get in their way. In social groups people may vie for attention. |
122 | high | Speeding is dangerous and uneconomical. I’ve since thought about my actions and realized that it’s not worth it at all, especially since it’s for a job and has no personal gain for me. |
123 | low | In software development you need to interact with customers and other developers. |
124 | low | This behavior can be seen in neighborhoods and communities. Many times people will come in contact and help each other when something is needed as a group. I feel like community service and outreach groups draw people together who must work together to achieve a common goal. |
125 | low | It could also be in sports as well, especially the flag football team I coach. After a game, if we lose and at the next practice I like to hear from my team and ask what we can improve on from everyone as well as give my input and instruct on what we can do to improve as a team because their is no I in team! |
126 | low | People help each other out everywhere. It’s kind of putting in social capital so that when you need help from someone else they’ll be willing to help you as you did for them. |
127 | high | This has happened to me at home, with my brothers and cousins when they do something better or faster than me |
129 | low | They could occur in lots of different places. If someone has their hands full and needs help carrying things. Just everyday encounters where you may need to ask for a helping hand. |
130 | high | The Nerf gun war is similar to the corporate world. Everybody is looking out for themselves, even if it means they have to be sneaky or gather up someone else’s resources. |
131 | high | I could also see how this behavior could be replicated in trying to get an upperhand on someone in a workplace situation, like trying to negotiate and get a better deal. |
132 | low | where ever you take it or however you view it it would always be seen as a wholesome and positive gesture |
133 | low | THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN A FRIEND GROUP, A TEACHER AND STUDENT, OR A PARENT AND CHILD. THE CONNECTIONS INDIVIDUALS HAVE WITH OTHERS, ENCOMPASSING FUNCTIONS SUCH AS PROMOTING HEALTH, PROVIDING SUPPORT, AND FOSTERING A SENSE OF KINSHIP. |
134 | high | Competition is life. Only the strongest got ahead when we were all just animals, and the cutthroat people today get ahead in businesses. |
135 | low | These will come across in your normal life in family dynamics as you work through change that comes across every day |
136 | high | For example, if someone came up with a really good product, they may want to keep that idea to themselves so that others cannot profit from it. |
137 | high | In sports it’s competitive. You want to be praised and be number 1. |
138 | low | These kinds of relationships and interactions can happen in everyday life. One example would be helping someone with a claim for a car accident. Both sides provide the necessary information and the claim is eventually settled. |
139 | low | In those situations, felt of built of trust at the workplace, and creating comfort. |
140 | high | Sports are very competitive and foster this kind of attitude |
141 | high | In a society that the basic living materials are limited (like food), people will fight for their own benefits only and try to get the limited resources without caring about other people. It is similar for any other benefits in the society that can only go to a limited number of people. |
143 | low | This behavior may be seen as a collaboration for the better good of the organization. |
144 | low | A community project with neighbors, a family project or event with family members, planning something with friend group |
145 | low | These kinds of interactions can occur in many kinds of groups, including personal friendships. People have to work through conflicts in a kind and helpful way to maintain social relationships. |
146 | low | In friendships, when someone is experiencing a difficulty, the friend may step in and help in any way they can. |
147 | high | In competitive work environments, a focus on self-interest to overshadow teamwork. |
148 | high | They could occur at school settings especially where competitively GPA is required to get into certain classes or programs. |
149 | high | I think these behaviors would be seen as a negative. However I think many people are competitive and pretend that they are not. I think that these behaviors emerge because society is so competitive. |
150 | low | I believe that behavioral can be seen in a real friendship setting maybe at church or home |
151 | high | This kind of interaction is commonplace around the world. Anytime there is a team with multiple people contributing to it’s success, there will always be differences in how much each member puts into the effort, and conflicts over this happen often, whether that be in academics, sports, or careers. |
152 | low | Elsewhere it could be seen as a sign of weakness depending on cultural contexts. If there’s a common goal, cooperation could be more likely. |
153 | low | The behavior I previously described is also applicable to personal relationships with friends and family. Clear, consistent communication is necessary to build and maintain these relationships, as well as an ability to coordinate for different needs such as each person’s schedule. |
154 | low | I feel like this type of interaction is very common in the workplace. It is seen as having empathy and generosity towards others. |
155 | low | I believe in most romantic relationships, most friendships, in communites and even at work. |
156 | high | People in other companies may show the same behaviors when they are looking for a promotion. |
157 | high | These interactions would occur in situations where there is something to gain. A few examples would be money, houses, and being in good favor of someone else. I’ve seen these situations a couple times with family and friends. |
158 | high | I think the constant looking over your shoulder and seeing how the competition is doing is always done in competitions. I think people will do this all in life. Always checking to see how we are doing compared with others, whether it be a competition or just day to day life. |
159 | low | These interactions might be viewed as sisterhood and can be seen among siblings or close family. |
160 | low | It may be seen as common teamwork in other businesses. In other social situations, this may be seen at voluntary events where no one knows each other. For example, at a cancer fundraising event where everyone had different posts and things that needed to get done. |
161 | high | It was only a game but I imagine in other parts of the world it would be viewed unfavorably, even in a game. Working solo rather than working as a group is, generally, discouraged. |
162 | high | I think behavior like this is seen all over many different career fields. For pay raises, promotions, for acknowledgement. |
163 | low | These cooperative behaviors frequently arise in team projects, community initiatives, workplace collaborations, and support groups, cultivating trust and mutual assistance. |
164 | high | I feel like my reaction was pretty normal. I feel like just like we had to in our more primal days, humans are very quick to turn on each other when their aren’t enough resources to go around. I could see this happening with food between siblings in a home where money is tight. I could see something similar with shelter and warmth with those who are unhoused. I could see similar behavior in a lot of different relationships and circumstances. I hope that was answering the question correctly! |
165 | high | I see competitiveness all the time with my friends and family. I think people always want to win, to be right, to be at the top of whatever is important to them. This happens in the workplace as well. |
166 | low | This behavior might be seen in other workplace or academic situations, but also in other situations where a group of individuals is trying to get through a stressful time together. |
167 | high | In any kind of competitive environment, people tend to get pushy and aggressive. |
168 | high | In conversations sometimes people compete over each other such as in arguments. They will make the conversation only about the argument they are interested in winning, and will block out everything else. Sometimes even if it hurts the relationship. |
169 | high | In a homeschool co-op with volunteering hours, the person wants to get the most, so they pay the less amount. |
170 | low | I think it’s how a lot of projects are put together among people who don’t really know each other well. Each person is assigned a small part of it and then they come together and combine them. |
172 | low | This behavior would be seen in a parent teaching a child how to do anything. This behavior would also be seen from a mentor, teaching others who look up to them. |
173 | low | There could be a situation where someone needs help but you can’t help them alone. Like if an elderly person falls while trying to get on a bus. You see someone helping them up and you would go to assist them. One person on each side, helping them balance and onto the bus. |
174 | low | This type of collaboration can be seen in many different areas of society. Sports, Wartime, and other types of construction projects. |
175 | low | These would emerge during any business relationship and even in family disagreements |
176 | high | They could emerge anywhere. Retail sales would most likely be where it happens the most. |
177 | high | This behavior can also be seen in politics where either party will do also anything to come out victorious |
178 | low | In a friend group, on a social setting, In any other workplace |
179 | high | I’m not sure. I guess trying to snatch up something before someone else gets it in a store, or rushing to get tickets before they sell out. |
180 | low | All over the place. They happen in home and family situations, as well as helping friends with issues that arise. |
181 | high | These interactions likely emerge with politics, in situations with economic gain, and in gambling / betting. |
182 | low | I think this behavior would be common in schools with people of all ages as well |
183 | high | I think people are often competing for the same things - romantic partners, jobs, even attention from parents as siblings. |
184 | high | In the workforce there is a sense of competition. People try to perform better than their peers and maybe don’t think about working to boost each other because they are trying to climb the ladder or get the promotions. |
185 | low | These emerge in any situation where there is a goal that is important. This could be in a family that is planning a vacation or working on a remodel. It could be volunteers, working together to raise money. |
186 | low | Cooperation thrives in team sports, community projects, and friendships. |
187 | high | I have been a member of a cross-fit gym in the past, and the classes we had were often competitions amongst each other to see who could complete a certain workout the fastest or who could complete the most repetitions of a certain movement or exercise. I found it to be to competitive for my liking and not very fun, so I stopped going there after a while. |
189 | low | This might be seen in a restaurant. There are many chefs and servers that keep the business running. Each server helps a number of tables and customers, each of whom have their own requests and orders. The chefs need to work together to ensure each customer is satisfied and receives the correct meal in a timely manner. |
190 | high | I assume these relationships would come up anytime two or more people are fighting for resources. I assume they only come up in situations where the resources are limited and there are more than one person wanting them. |
191 | low | Whether it’s Friendsgiving, or raising a kid, any time that community support can be asked for, some people will volunteer to provide assistance, and others will provide advice. Ideally, the advice isn’t unsolicited, and everyone is generally kind to each other. |
192 | high | For financial compensation, affecting work life balance is less of an issue. I can’t think of a bigger reason to work harder and perform better for your manager. |
193 | high | I would think this type of behavior would work with friendships and romantic relationships. I think that people would get competitive in romantic relationships and try to get friends to give in a good word for them. I believe if I heard good things about someone from someone I know, it gives them more credibility. |
194 | low | We were basically helping a family friend. We have helped her with numerous other things. We are able bodied and she is not. These relationships just happen in real life and helping others is part of being a decent human being. |
195 | low | I would definitely say coming together to think of a good solution is something you see in many different places. It can be with friends or total strangers, they just have to put in the effort. |
196 | high | It may seem cold or distant. It can occur anywhere there is competitiveness. |
197 | low | It can be seen even in the streets walking by seeing someone in need if they drop their grocery’s on the floor or even in settings like church or home |
198 | high | These interactions can be seen in professional spheres when someone is desperate to get ahead. |
199 | high | These kinds of relationships and interactions might emerge in competitive sports or in the educational space too. These are also competitive spaces where some people might try to cheat to get ahead. |
200 | low | The kinds of situations would emerge in community settings. The community determines a goal and everyone that is invested in achieving that goal would work together, regardless of what their roles or responsibilities are. |
201 | high | It can show up in colleges when a professor gives students an assignment and they are told that the first person to get it done will receive something special. |
202 | high | These relationships and interactions we experienced would occur in almost every major corporation. |
203 | low | My cooperative behavior would be seen as positive in the social world as this is the behavior we need in order to work together to get things done. It is also the qualities of a friendly empathetic person which is positive and most people want to be around. |
204 | low | I often see it in situations where others need help. Especially when it comes to those who are able to initiate sympathy and empathy from others |
205 | low | These interactions and relationships can be seen in team relationships such as sports and entertainment. |
206 | low | I think it happens in any situation where a group of people are organizing an event. This could be a community event or a family event, etc. |
207 | low | I think it shows human empathy. I think that would come up quite a lot. |
208 | high | I think competitve behaviors are very commonplace regardless of where it happens. People, and especially individualistic cultures, often tend to put self over community. Therefore competition is bound to happen. |
209 | high | My behavior might be seen as greedy and sneaky in social relationships outside of a workplace. These kinds of relationships could emerge in friendship circles where people are trying to increase their popularity above that if their friends and add new people to their circle. |
